Rutland Hideaways- Family Friendly UK Staycation - Dog FriendlY

Tucked away at the top of a winding gravel path, nestled in a vast, lush, grassy wildflower field, you'll find two beautifully hand crafted, stylish lodges which blend seamlessly into their peaceful, secluded surroundings. All you’ll hear while you sit on your private, cosy veranda, is the beautiful hum of the hedgerow, muntjac deer foraging nearby and perhaps you’ll catch a glimpse of a barn owl hunting the surrounding landscape at dusk.

This heavenly little slice of the UK countryside is the home of Rutland Hideaways - the perfect family friendly (and dog friendly) UK staycation.

Choosing a family friendly self catering accommodation in the UK

I must say I always struggle when it comes to finding and choosing family friendly self catering accommodation. I’ve got it wrong many (many) times (hence setting up Family Spy Club, so I can make all the mistakes and give you as readers only the best intel!)

In various locations over the years we’ve been met with hazards such as a sheer drop from the house to the garden (toddler A&E visit on holiday anyone?), unfenced ponds with an inviting layer of sludge on top of them (the antithesis of relaxation) and a general lack of anything child-friendly nearby, which in itself makes for a frustrating staycation - as your children are left bouncing off the walls.

I so often now rely on personal recommendations and Rutland Hideaways did in fact come as a tip off from an old friend of mine. I of course, had to oblige (no persuasion needed) and book in for a weekend away.

Rutland Hideaways - Accommodation

Following the unending popularity of their onsite converted, boutique two bedroom barn, The Cow Shed, owners Rachel and Chris told me they were keen to offer more guests the opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquillity of their small holding.

Kite Lodge and Fallow Lodge are brand new and only opened earlier this year (April 2024). Since so much of the charm of Chris and Rachel’s farm lies in its utter seclusion, guest privacy was high on the agenda. For this reason, despite having planning permission for six lodges, they chose to build just two - positioned with such consideration, making them incredibly discreet and allowing for guests never being overlooked.

As an example, we stayed in Kite Lodge and the bedroom window, which is the only window angled towards the main farmhouse, has had a young oak tree intentionally planted in the perfect spot to offer a privacy screen - and the angle of the lodge is such that you are completely hidden from view. From the veranda, you’d never even know there was another accommodation in the vicinity. During our stay, there was a multi generational family visiting Fallow Lodge with children and we genuinely didn’t hear or see a single thing. Equally, if you were to visit Rutland Hideaways with another family, friends or grandparents, this provides the wonderful balance between privacy and a sense of togetherness as you could join together in the outside areas.

Kite Lodge

Kite Lodge, named after the often frequenting, striking Red Kite birds of prey, is the farthest accommodation of the three and boasts a beautiful, large outdoor undercover veranda with comfortable seating and, like Fallow Lodge, a hot tub. If you are on the hunt for a family friendly UK staycation with a hot tub, look no further.

The lodge itself boasts two good sized bedrooms, the master bedroom having the addition of a luxurious, jet black roll top bath with a glorious green foliage inspired feature wall and pink neon sign reading ‘Good Vibes Only’. These are of course the only vibes we bring with us anyway…unless there has been a lot of traffic en route.

There is an additional, medium sized, modern main family bathroom with a shower available too just behind the kitchen area.

The second bedroom can accommodate two single beds (which could also be made into a double). We had ours kindly reconfigured before we arrived, with one single bed for our older daughter and a travel cot provided for our youngest. This was extremely thoughtful hosting - as we do often let accommodation know that we need a cot and this is simply squeezed into a corner. The fact the bed was taken away for our stay meant we had so much additional space for our belongings.

The beds were exquisitely comfortable and the pillows, towels and linen passed the FSC floof test. (I shall in time find a better name for this test - but for those of you who have read any other of my reviews will know, the mark of a good self catering accommodation often rests on the quality of their towels, linen and pillows.)

The kitchen is very well equipped with all the mod cons you’d need for a weekend. A couple of things to note for those with babies / those bottle feeding or mid weaning with purees - there is no microwave in the lodge but the electric hob served us just fine for warming milk and meals.

It’s decked out with a dishwasher (woohoo!) and a spacious oven as well as child friendly cutlery, plates and bowls. High chairs are available upon request. The Nespresso machine delivered a much need coffee hit each morning and we loved the stylish, velvet stools at the breakfast bar.

The living room area is welcoming and bougie, a plush velvet sofa and armchair with an expansive electric fireplace flickering below the 42 inch flat screen smart television.

I must say, what I loved most about this lodge was the undercover outside decked seating area. Reclining in the evening, gazing out onto the pristine open fields, with a glass of Rosé in one hand and a book in the other, absorbing the pure peace and quiet alongside surrounding wildlife was incredibly special. All of this, knowing the children were tucked up and sleeping soundly after a long day of fresh air and utter wholesomeness.

Parking and Accessibility

Upon arrival, parking is in a converted equestrian arena meaning a super surface (ie you won’t get bogged in during winter months!) and plenty of space to manoeuvre (important intel for the husbands amongst us perhaps - mine at least, likes to do his due dil on the parking arrangements - a key tick box for a successful road trip).

Due to the positioning of the lodges, you can’t drive directly up to them and park outside but two very handy carts are provided to transport your belongings (or transport the actual children in our case). If you have guests with mobility requirements, The Cow Shed is a better option than the Lodges themselves due to the undulated nature of the surrounding pathway. I’d also recommend bringing an off road buggy if you have one for younger children.

Extras

The things we loved about Rutland Hideaways were all the lovely little touches and extras available. Breakfast, dinner and BBQ packages could be arranged for you and there is a firepit in the garden, so logs and lighters can also be added on at surcharge if you want to enjoy an evening huddled around the fire.

Bring marshmallows!

Dog Friendly UK Self Catering

When we arrived we were greeted with a lovely little care package for our dog Wilma, including some locally sourced (and allergy friendly!) dog treats and a bowl.

There are wonderful walks nearby and a list of these is provided - there is a garden area and a huge field behind the lodge to have a good run around of an evening. You may even bump into one of the two lovely resident spaniels who will show you the best sniffing spots and rabbit holes.

A note for doggy guests that beds are not provided for you, plus the sofa is a no go zone so do bring your own.

An outdoor dog poo bin is provided for waste and I’d say if you had a nervous or reactive dog, this accommodation would be suitable since there is nothing in the vicinity to worry them. The garden isn’t totally enclosed so you’d have to keep any of the more unruly canines on a lead.

Things to Do with Families in Rutland

Rutland, the UK’s smallest county is well known for its idyllic countryside - serving up a peaceful retreat with its rolling hills, quaint villages, and the stunning Rutland Water reservoir. This vast lake is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering activities such as sailing, fishing, and bird watching and is only a 20 minute drive from Rutland Hideaways. Many families do like to head to a coastal destination for their UK family mini breaks, but from now on, I’ll be giving as much airtime to inland counties as they are usually much more reasonably priced and have as much, if not more to offer.

Rutland's culinary scene is impressive, with numerous pubs, restaurants, and cafes serving delicious local produce. Throughout the year you’ll be treated to various food festivals and farmers' markets, all being a nod to the County's strong agricultural heritage.

We visited Woolfox for brunch, a stylish, scandi inspired wellness centre and private golf club with the addition of a gorgeous, muted tonal sheepskin adorned cafe. The food was exquisite - we enjoyed some glorious pastries, turkish eggs and banana bread french toast with homemade compote. Don’t miss it while you’re staying!

  • The picturesque Georgian market town of Stamford is a mere 15 minute drive from Rutland Hideaways and well worth a visit. We explored the town with our two children, there were plenty of sweet little shops, cafes and restaurants and there are events held here seasonally. Oakham (which is home to Oakham castle) and Uppingham are also worth a stop over if you enjoy a meandre.

  • Belvoir Castle made for an amazing day out - we were fortunate that there was a weekend event being held with lots of local stalls and produce but the castle and ground itself is seriously impressive, with a very comprehensive adventure playground. There is a fair bit of an uphill walk involved (ie. If you have children like mine who don’t love walking, get them mentally geared up beforehand!) but for those with genuine limited mobility and not just a couple of reluctant children, a shuttle service was available.

  • Just five minutes drive from Rutland Hideaways is the Spinney, a totally free, totally perfect outdoor adventure playground, spread across an area of forest, with an additional toddler friendly enclosed mini playground. This kept the girls entertained for hours.

  • Another local gem is the National Trust site of Woolsthorpe Manor - built in 1665 it is home to Isaac Newtons very famous ‘Tree’ where he developed his theory of gravity. For science enthusiasts this is a super stop over with some interactive activities and is a nice one to tick off the list of UK landmarks!

Rutland Hideaways have an extensive list of additional recommendations for nearby attractions and places to eat - you won’t be stuck for choice.

The Verdict

This family friendly, Dog Friendly UK self catering lodge is perfect for those looking for a slice of peace and quiet (as much as your children will allow of course). It’s super dog friendly, private and has an abundance of activities and delicious food in the local area to enjoy.

Ideal for a long weekend, a multi generational getaway or a mini break with friends. We visited in June but it is available all year round. If you do decide to visit during winter months, there isn’t masses of ‘hosting’ space available to spend lots of time indoors (unless you only have small babies or toddlers) but there is an outdoor heater so you can still enjoy the outside area. There is however so much going on locally that if you enjoy exploring and spending time outdoors whatever the weather, this is a wonderful base to curl up in at the end of the day.

Overall, we had a fantastic stay - it was truly parent pleasing, child friendly, dog friendly and fuss free.

Family Spied & tried: Four Seasons Hampshire

The Four Seasons name is renowned Worldwide - synonymous with five star luxury, elegance and style. Whilst many of the group's residences are situated in popular city locations, its rural Hampshire offering is rather unique. Sitting proudly at the end of a long, sweeping driveway is a striking 18th century Georgian Manor, nestled on a vast 500 acre estate - Four Seasons Hampshire has a true sense of tranquillity, grandeur and charm.

This idyllic UK staycation spot caters to the needs and desires of every member of the family (including four legged canine guests!) promising an unforgettable stay immersed in natural beauty and refined hospitality.

Location

Four Seasons Hampshire is situated in Dogmersfield - a 15-minute taxi ride from Fleet station (a 45 minute train from London Waterloo) or by car, can be accessed from J5 of the M3 motorway. With an aptly named village location - Four Seasons is incredibly Dog friendly, so if you have a four legged family member, they are very welcome (and will undoubtedly be in a similar utopia to their human counterparts).

If you’re travelling from further afield, Heathrow airport is a mere 30 minutes away, or If you intend to arrive by private jet - Farnborough airfield is a 20 minute transfer. At Four Seasons, everything is possible and nothing is too much trouble.

Arrival

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a warm, welcoming team who went above and beyond. Valet parking whisked away our car and discreetly transported our bags up to our room whilst we relaxed in the drawing room adjacent to reception. When we arrived, the entranceway was adorned with an impressive display of flowers and Easter decor and this same theme was mirrored throughout the rest of the hotel.

The Hotel

With 133 rooms including 22 suites, this is a large manor hotel, however the layout has been carefully designed with so much natural light via a glass panelled walkway quadrant. This almost brings the outside in and means the size is not imposing. We stayed in the South Wing, in one of the hotel's signature Heritage rooms. All rooms have views out onto the grounds and feel both private and quiet. We were greeted by a lovely message to our two girls written on the mirror - which my eldest thought was so magical (I of course told her the fairies knew she was coming - the things we do as parents…)

For turndown, the girls were left a little glass bottle of milk with a straw as well as a cookie - which of course went down a treat.

Other small but thoughtful touches are included during your stay such as complimentary shoe cleaning - simply leave your shoes outside your room by 1am and they are returned to you early the following morning. Ideal if you have a meeting or event!

Facilities

I road tested the hotel's very well equipped Gym - which is available 24 hours and was lovely and quiet early in the morning. A range of exercise classes are on offer too and bookable on site, which include everything from Yoga to more cardio based sessions.

The large, naturally lit pool area is a real treat for the senses - housed in a large glass panelled atrium, it includes sauna and steam room and waterfall showers - but for me the real treat was the crisp, not overly chlorinated water and a set of doors which led to a secluded outdoor pool area.

If you’re a fan of spas - Four Seasons Hampshire offers a range of treatments - from Harley Street Facials and Kundalini Chakra Healing to more traditional Deep Tissue and Lymphatic Massages. Pregnancy massage is also on offer for expectant mamas to enjoy.

As with the other activities, spa treatments should be booked in advance to avoid disappointment.

Decor and design

We were impressed with the decor and detailing throughout the hotel. Each communal space was adorned with a large seasonal flower display and the restaurant and bar areas had beautiful, thoughtfully curated lighting and ornaments which complimented the soft furnishings and theme of each space.

Our room was equally luxurious and equipped with all conveniences - fluffy towels, soft, decadent crisp bedding, robes and slippers (for both adults and children) and of course, a well stocked mini bar.

Sustainability

Four Seasons is deeply committed to it’s sustainability efforts. In addition, the estate grounds are carefully managed and we were informed that in recent months, many new species of wildlife have made their home on the estate due to its considered efforts to retain and encourage the growth of wildflowers and biodiversity.

Things to do nearby

Hampshire is a county rich in sights and there is so much to do for families nearby. Local  attractions include the very famous Stonehenge and Windsor Castle and for literary fans, the Jane Austen House Museum makes for a wonderful afternoon.

Additional sights include:

Birdworld - 10 miles (25 mins)

Finkley Down Farm - 30 miles (35 mins)

Legoland Windsor - 28 miles (40 mins)

Marwell Zoo - 34 miles (45 mins)

Peppa Pig World - 44 miles (50 mins)

From my personal perspective, this hotel really is an adventure in itself, there is so much to see and do that once we arrived, we absolutely did not want to leave. If you’re here for two or three nights, the children will have more than enough entertainment on site and you really have everything you need exactly where you are.

Activities available at Four Seasons Hampshire include:

Horse riding

Pony grooming sessions

Falconry

Fishing

Bird watching

Clay pigeon shooting

Canal boating on Basingstoke Canal

Cycling

Croquet

Tennis

We were fortunate enough to enjoy the most incredible falconry experience with the hotel's very experienced resident Falconer Simon, who I must say was a wonderful host and it was a real highlight of our stay. He treated us to an engaging and informative session (despite rather wet weather conditions!) where we met various species of birds of prey and had the opportunity to interact with them close up. If you are planning a stay at Four Seasons Hampshire - the Falconry experience is something you really won’t want to miss.

Pre booking is very much advised.

Food and Drink

We enjoyed the most delicious Easter themed Afternoon Tea in the drawing room when we arrived. The offering here is seasonal - it was rather a special way to begin our Four Seasons experience, with an array of delicious finger sandwiches and beautifully designed, intricate patisserie cakes.

Our evening meal was hosted in the on site Wild Carrot Restaurant. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, with many younger diners under the age of 8 which put us instantly at ease. There are not many five star settings which manage to curate an environment where children and fine dining go hand in hand - but the Wild Carrot has done just that.

We love the fact that children under 5 eat free here - taking all the guilt out of ordering a lovely meal which they do inevitably only eat a small part of (However delicious the food!). We didn’t need to worry about this thankfully as the children’s menu and desserts were very well received by the mini critics in our group!

Us adults were equally impressed - we tried the signature dishes of Hampshire Trout Tartare and braised lamb shoulder. Everything was prepared to perfection and was a true ode to local countryside flavours. All ingredients are sourced locally and sustainably and prepared under the guidance of Executive Chef Talha Barkin.

Our breakfast experience in Wild Carrot was equally as impressive - with a huge range of warm and continental options, as well as a dedicated Bloody Mary bar, you’ll be spoilt for choice and set up for the day.

If you are seeking a more laid back culinary option - in room dining is available around the clock. Perfect for those late night cravings once the children have dropped off to sleep…

Children at Four Seasons Hampshire

Children are at the forefront of the experiences at the hotel. When we checked in, my eldest was given a Four Seasons Kids passport - and what could be better than collecting stamps to stave off any inevitable restless moments! She received one straight away for being at reception and throughout the stay, as each area of the hotel was visited, she could pick up additional stamps.

Sharkies Reef was hot on our agenda and had been widely discussed before we arrived with friends who had stayed previously. This dedicated children's pool boasts a four metre slide, which I am delighted to share, was equipped with a generous padded area at the bottom. This saved my knees when I was roped in to joining the children (thank you Four Seasons!). Adjacent to the water features and slide was a children's pool which was also very swimmable for adults. This was great as it meant I didn’t have to spend two entire hours in 0.5m water with the children and could do some lengths whilst they played!

The adults pool does also offer family friendly slots from 4pm-7pm and at weekends 8am-10am so you do have this option too.

Childcare wise, Kids for All Seasons is the on site kids club and free for children over four years old (this can also be unsupervised by parents and the childcare team take over). When we visited, there was a huge variety of Easter themed crafts and games being enjoyed by everyone inside. There is a babysitting service too should you require it.

Included in your stay are a number of items which mean you don’t have to bring your own:

  • Cots

  • Bottle sterilisers

  • High chairs

  • Baby baths

  • Nappies

  • Swim nappies

  • Children's bathrobes

  • Bed guards

  • Sofa beds

perfect for…

A truly luxurious mini break or staycation. Four Seasons is the epitome of opulence and if you are looking for a weekend getaway to be waited on hand and foot, this is the place.

Avoid if…

You prefer a more low-key family break.

Price

Double rooms are available from £650 per night year-round with breakfast included.

Dining wise - starters in the Wild Carrot from £13 and main dishes range from £39-£59

Family-Friendly Travel: The New Forest, UK

The New Forest: Family Staycation

Nestled in the idyllic countryside of southern England, only 1hr 30 minutes from London, lies the enchanting expanse of the New Forest National Park. The New Forests ancient woodland offers a tapestry of experiences that seamlessly blend history, wildlife, and adventure for all ages. Perhaps best known for its unspoilt wildlife, in particular, the free roaming ponies - it is a haven for families and nature enthusiasts. If you are anything like me and love horses, there is nothing more beautiful than the sight of wild ponies and it feels incredibly special to have this unique opportunity on our doorstep, right here in the UK.

I recall visiting a B&B in the New Forest when I was a child and the owner inviting the ponies in to the courtyard in the evenings - my Dad got a bit close to one of the mares with a foal at foot and wasn’t far off getting nipped - lesson learnt to respect the fact that they truly are wild! I told my family this story in the car on the way there about Grandpa which they found very entertaining…

If you’re looking for a UK based family staycation this year, The New Forest should most certainly be on your bucket list.

The Rich History of the New Forest

Steeped in centuries-old heritage, the New Forest holds a storied past that dates back to the time of William the Conqueror. Originally established as a royal hunting ground in 1079, the forest served as a playground for mediaeval monarchs seeking respite and recreation. Over the centuries, it evolved into a thriving ecosystem, shaped by human habitation, agriculture, and conservation efforts. Today, it stands as a testament to England's natural and cultural heritage, designated as a National Park in 2005 to protect its unique landscape and biodiversity.

Getting to The New Forest

Accessing the New Forest is a breeze, thanks to its strategic location and well-connected transport networks. Hiring a car (in my opinion) is certainly advisable if you want the best opportunity to explore.

By Car: For those travelling from London or nearby cities, driving to the New Forest is a popular option. The journey typically takes around 2-3 hours, offering scenic views along the way.

By Train: Several train services connect major cities like London, Southampton, and Bournemouth to stations near the New Forest, such as Brockenhurst and New Milton. From these stations, travellers can hop on local buses or taxis to reach their desired destinations within the forest.

By Bus: Local bus services operate within the New Forest, providing convenient access to various villages and attractions. Additionally, hop-on-hop-off tour buses offer a hassle-free way to explore multiple sites in a day, perfect for families looking to maximise their time.

Where to stay

We stayed at the beautiful Montagu Arms, in the heart of Beaulieu. This stunning hotel dates back to the 16th Century and is steeped in history. Upon entering reception, guests get a sense of this grandeur with dark oak beams, a sweeping staircase and carefully chosen antiques and decor (including some wonderful historical black and white images of the hotel itself). This traditional style and opulence within the main building - which consists of 22 en-suite rooms -  is balanced with more modern, but still classically elegant courtyard rooms and duplex suites in the renovated barn. We stayed in ‘Juniper’, which was a beautiful, large family room with a stunning four poster bed, fold out sofa bed and cot for our baby.

The room led down some steps into a stylish bathroom, with a large free standing bath and separate shower, as well as a double sink. Although a small touch - travelling with children and having a double sink is a real treat when it comes to persuasive teeth-brushing conversations!

The hotel kindly provided little activity packs for the girls and very cute donkey shaped gingerbread biscuits! Both of which proved invaluable entertainment while we had some down time during a spell of rain. One thing you can’t bet on whilst away,, is the weather! We found the room SO comfortable and light - the fact that we had our own little walled garden made it feel cosy and private with no concerns about the children playing or making a bit of noise.

We were fortunate enough to have a sunny spell the following morning, during which we explored the forest and came across a herd of donkeys, who greeted us whilst making their way up the road. Interacting with wildlife in such an authentic way was such a privilege and for my eldest daughter who is six, was clearly a very seismic moment as she has been talking about her ‘Donkey friend’ ever since!

For garden lovers, The Montagu Arms has stunning Gertrude Jekyll-inspired grounds and a pond fountain designed by Giuseppe Lund. It is also home to an allotment and grows its own fresh produce for use in the hotel kitchen.

We enjoyed a wonderful evening meal at Monty’s restaurant, adjacent to the hotel. The atmosphere was laid back and welcoming and we were in the vicinity of a number of younger diners in high chairs who were locals! Always a good sign - and made us feel so at ease with the children. The food was fresh, tasty and unpretentious. The children's menu had a great range of dishes (plus some show stopping desserts which are a must! Save space!).

Our breakfast the next morning at the hotel was equally delicious, with a range of continental options and traditional a la carte. The croissants were fresh and fluffy and the coffee on point, what more could a parent ask for! The little ones tucked into the locally sourced sausages, bacon and eggs which went down a storm and set us up for a day of activities.

Overall, if you’re looking for a stylish, comfortable, traditional and welcoming English hotel, this one is for you.

Dog Friendly

We love the fact that The Montagu Arms welcomes dogs and there is so much to do with your four legged friends in the New Forest. The hotel shares their Top Five Local Dog Walks here - many of these walks are also ideal for children to join on their bikes, off road buggies or cruising in their toddler backpacks. Wellies are a must!

It’s important to note that due to wildlife, it’s advisable that dog’s are kept on the lead in the forest. Even our lovely Wilma who is incredibly well behaved wouldn’t be able to resist the temptation of a deer hopping out in front of her!

There is so much to do in The New Forest with Families, here are some of our favourites:

Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary

    • For a serene and enchanting experience, venture to Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary, where families can witness fallow deer roaming freely amidst ancient woodlands.

    • Prices: Admission to the deer sanctuary is free of charge, offering families the opportunity to connect with nature without breaking the bank.

    • Insider Tip: Time your visit to coincide with the deer feeding sessions for an up-close and personal encounter.

Things to Consider

Traffic: Be aware that during peak tourist seasons, traffic can be a challenge, particularly on narrow country roads within the forest. We’d suggest visiting during quieter times if you can or plan your journeys accordingly - consider exploring lesser-known areas to avoid crowds and congestion.

Unfenced Water: The New Forest National Park has so many beautiful ponds and streams but most are not fenced off and can be deep, which is something to be conscious of when walking around with young children.

Ticks: As with any outdoor environment, it's essential to be mindful of ticks, which can carry diseases such as Lyme disease. Dress appropriately, use insect repellents, and do regular tick checks, particularly after spending time in wooded or grassy areas of the forest.

When to visit

The New Forest is beautiful all year round but this is what to expect throughout the seasons:

Spring (March to May)

Witness nature awakening from its winter slumber as vibrant flowers carpet the forest floor. This is the time to be conscious of wildlife and baby animals who might be hiding. The temperature is mild and ideal for outdoor adventures and fewer crowds compared to the summer months. Just be aware it can still be quite wet! Do bring appropriate rainwear and footwear.

Summer (June to August)

Bask in the warmth of the summer sun as the forest teems with life and energy. Explore lush greenery, partake in outdoor activities, and make the most of longer daylight hours. Be prepared for higher visitor numbers during peak season. Sunrise and sunset walks are a must depending on which end of the day you prefer!

Autumn (September to November)

Experience the enchanting beauty of autumn as the forest transforms into a kaleidoscope of golden hues. Revel in crisp air, rustling leaves, and opportunities for scenic walks.

Winter (December to February)

Embrace the tranquillity and peace of winter as the forest takes on a serene and magical ambiance. Enjoy cosy moments, spot wildlife against the backdrop of frost-kissed landscapes, and get away from the hustle and bustle. The ideal time to curl up and play board games by the fireplace!

Visiting the New Forest with Children

The New Forest promises a tapestry of cherished memories and unforgettable experiences and I’d certainly recommend visiting if you’re looking for a UK Family Staycation. From delving into the forest's rich history to encountering wildlife, there's something to captivate the hearts of visitors of all ages. My main tip would be to book ahead - this not only guarantees entry into some of the more popular attractions but saves money and time if you’re on a shorter visit. I’d also highly recommend bringing your dog if you have one - as the walks are wonderful and so scenic.

You’re (almost) guaranteed to see wild ponies too!

Family Friendly Travel Review: Ffolkes, Norfolk, UK

Exploring Family Friendly Norfolk

Ffolkes is one of the most fun, quirky and unique hotels we’ve stayed in as a family in recent years. Refurbished in 2017, the original building is a 300 year old coaching inn and has not only retained it’s historical charm, but it’s since had a big injection of personality, bold colour and fun. With a motto of Feast, Stay and Play, it ticks all of these boxes (and some) for an activity packed, family weekend away.

Ffolkes: Norfolk, UK

Location

Norfolk is well known and loved as a quintessential UK hotspot all year round and we are incredibly lucky to live only a couple of hours drive away. My husband and I tied the knot in Norfolk in 2019, so it’s also a favourite destination of ours. Someone once said to me that the beauty of Norfolk is in the fact that it’s an ‘Intentional Destination’; and by that he meant, due to it’s geography, being tucked away on the East Coast of England, you’ll never just be passing through on your waysomewhere else. Everyone who comes, is there intentionally, which I love!

Ffolkes is nestled in Hillington, a West Norfolk village on the edge of the A148. From pictures alone, you might have thought traffic noise would come into play, but we didn’t experience this at all (and our room was closer to the roadside than others.) There are three brand new spa cabins set right back into the fields behind Ffolkes, so if you’re keen for complete peace, I’d recommend selecting those for guaranteed tranquillity.

The hotel is less than five minutes drive from The Royal Residence of Sandringham Estate, which of course, we had to pay a visit. My eldest daughter has been learning about the Royal Family quite a bit at school following the Coronation and has consequently become a keen royalist. She was convinced we’d bump into the King, cue expectation management (!). His Majesty was otherwise engaged this time around. The main house wasn’t open to the public off season, but we had a fantastic time enjoying the woods and gardens, but most importantly, (aside from my delicious Coronation Chicken sandwich) was the expansive play area which the children went wild for.

The other highlight of our stay was a place the locals fondly refer to as ‘Sunny Hunny’ - Hunstanton Beach. The beach is around a 15 minute drive from Ffolkes and absolutely vast. In the warmer months, this makes for a wonderful whole day out. As it was a tad chillier, we wrapped up and took the girls for a morning walk and adventure across the dunes, finished off with a hot chocolate at a lovely cafe (dog friendly!) next to the beach.

Within 15-30 minutes drive of Ffolkes are other attractions such as Snettisham Park, Castle Riding and the RSPB’s Titchwell Marsh - all great options for days out with children so there is plenty to do nearby.

Accommodation

Dog Friendly Hotel, Norfolk, Ffolkes

Ffolkes has 23 rooms and three spa cabins, we stayed in the ‘Bunksuite’ - Room 21, which sleeps up to 6 and is also dog friendly. Wilma (our little lurcher) is always delighted to join us on our adventures, so it’s a real treat when she can come along to somewhere truly welcoming of canines. A dog blanket and bowls were provided for her and there was a little grassy haven across the carpark for loo breaks, plus lots of conveniently located poop bins, so Ffolkes have catered well for doggy guests. The restaurant and lounge area is also dog friendly. Ffolkes request you do not leave your dog alone in the room, so she did come with us wherever we went during our stay.

Aside from being super dog friendly, The Bunksuite was the epitome of child friendly. It had two sets of colourful, built in bunk beds, each with it’s own private den-like nook and reading light which my eldest loved. We were provided with a cot and cot bedding for our 1 year old which fit into the bunk room. I now always check if cot bedding is provided before we arrive anywhere, as we’ve been on a handful of trips and have been met with a bare cot with no mattress or sheets! So it was wonderful that these were provided.

The mattresses, bedding, pillows and towels were all incredibly comfortable and luxurious, plus we were given robes for us adults and little hooded robes for the children. If you’re a fan of BBC’s ‘The Traitors’ you may appreciate this…

The Traitors, BBC

From our room, opening our sliding glass doors revealed an outdoor undercover terrace and dining area, split by a rotating mirrored door - hidden behind which was an enormous, colourful, freestanding bath. The children LOVED this as it felt so unique and exciting for them. I also got to enjoy it - one evening I disappeared behind the door and had a bath ALL to myself! The dream as a busy parent!

The decor at the Ffolkes is what I could only describe as something along the lines of ‘Urban Arthouse Chic’. It had East London, modern, edgy vibes with cheeky touches. As an example, the restaurant and lounge areas were adorned with traditional, Georgian and Victorian portraits, set off by a collaged addition of a moustache, bow or inflated bubble gum on each image. Playfully hanging from the ceilings around our suite were Barbie dolls and Action Men, dressed up and humorously positioned. All of this absolutely delighted my children.

Facilities, Service & Family Friendliness

A lovely welcoming touch when we first arrived was a delicious coffee cake from Sponge, left in our room, which, like Ffolkes, is an organisation that forms part of the Norfolk Passport. The Norfolk Passport is a free to join membership programme that offers exclusive perks - at the Ffolkes, this is 10% off stays, food and drink, so it is definitely worthwhile signing up prior to your stay.

The service throughout our stay was impeccable, the whole family, dog included, had a warm, friendly welcome and at every turn we were met by helpful and cheerful members of the team, who were forthcoming with local recommendations of places to go and things to see.

Container Golf - ever heard of it? Neither had we! But I can guarantee, when you’ve tried it once, you’ll be back. This was essentially a game of mini golf, set up inside a maze of converted shipping containers, wildly decorated, at the back of the main building. Note the cost of playing isn’t included in your stay, so you need to book slots online (this was very easy as the booking QR code and all information formed part of our welcome pack). It was certainly an experience navigating it with a toddler, but she had just as much, if not more fun than us exploring each section.

The playground at Ffolkes is another highlight for families. It was totally secure and contained, and could only be accessed via the restaurant, which was reassuring from a safety perspective. It centres around a giant hollow ‘Dinosaur Egg’ with rope swings and cargo net, as well as a zip wire. The conservatory area of the restaurant adjoining the playground was glass fronted, so if you have slightly older children, you can enjoy your coffee and breakfast indoors whilst watching them play if you wish. If you’re like us - and parents of toddlers - you’ll be out there enjoying it with them!

Dining

Ffolkes had a real mixture of guests, including families, groups of friends and couples. There was an informal, energetic feel to the main restaurant in the evenings, with a vast cocktail menu and street food on offer.

The lunch and evening menus are on a rotation from different vendors. We tried out Oishii Street Kitchen which was a delicious asian fusion selection, with choices such as Bao Buns, Gyoza, rice bowls, burgers and loaded fries amongst others. There are also Pie Feasts on Sundays, Guac & Mole and Reesey's Street Tea (which has delicious desserts, not one for the calorie conscious consumer!)

The food was good value for money (particularly with our 10% Norfolk Passport discount) with starters and sides around £5-8 and mains around £11.50.

Breakfast and Brunch is on offer until midday on Saturday, which meant there was ample time to sample the large buffet of traditional offerings (think sausages, black pudding and hash browns) as well as some more off-piste options (for example spicy beans and pulled pork). There was also a large continental selection of cereals, yoghurt, fruit and pastries and unlimited coffee, tea and juice. The onsite chef was there ready to whip up fresh pancakes on tap as well as eggs of your choice.

Overall

We had an incredibly memorable stay, and Ffolkes is truly family (and dog!) friendly. If you’re looking for a laid back, super easy weekend getaway in Norfolk with children, or even need the perfect venue to host an event (Ffolkes is home to Stables which is a large event space!) then I’d highly recommend it. Container golf was certainly on the top of our list for our favourite part of the weekend, so we’ll be back!

The Bunksuite starts at £220 per night (sleeps 6)

A Family Friendly Winter Escape: Villa LA Dolce, Lake Como

For us, 2024 started with a very special, family friendly, winter escape. January, which is often low-key, bleak and, let's face it, rather long after a busy festive season, prompted us to plan a getaway to lift our spirits and set the tone for how we hope this year continues to unfold…

Having always heard wonderful feedback from others about their holidays to the famous Italian Lakes, we were fortunate enough to arrange a trip with The Luxury Travel Book and head to the heart of picturesque Lake Como - a destination which had consequently been on our wishlist for quite a while. We stayed in the exquisite Villa La Dolce, a luxurious property, full of history and character, nestled in the hills of Santa Maria Rezzonico - an ancient village in the upper Lario area of the lake which is 40 kms from Como.

The beginning of the year is usually a time for resolutions, gym subscriptions and cutting back, but before any of that truly set in, we decided to fully embrace the local culture. This of course meant indulging in (and carefully sampling) every pasta, pizza and tiramisu option available (because fully experiencing Italy wouldn’t be immersive without tucking in to the local cuisine). It did not disappoint.

Our trip unfolded against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains and the tranquil waters of Lake Como (which of course us adults had to have a quick dip in, not once, but twice…chilly but refreshing!). We were incredibly fortunate to have some fantastic weather (11-12C and sunshine) and although I haven’t visited the area in Summer to offer a comparison, we spoke to many locals who assured us that winter was the perfect time to visit - less hustle, quieter crowds and freedom to explore at leisure.

Booking

The Luxury Travel Book strikes an amazing balance between personalised travel concierge and a self catering accommodation booking platform. Unlike Airbnb or similar rental DIY sites which can be exhaustive (in all the wrong ways I find) The Luxury Travel Book experience is premium - but still very much value for money, particularly when arranging a family trip, where there are so many nuances and details that you don’t want to miss.

I can honestly report that the responsiveness and attention to detail from The Luxury Travel Book team was exceptional, creating an environment where our needs were not just met but exceeded, before, during and after our visit,

As an example, when we first came across Villa La Dolce we noticed a picture of the spiral staircase on the website - which for our 1 year old, would have been a fairground (for us…maybe not as enjoyable extracting her from it daily). Very quickly, we were reassured that this was not the main access staircase and could be easily secured and child proofed. As promised, when we arrived it was incredibly well blocked off and she couldn’t have gained access (even with her steadfast determination). This small detail was a huge plus for us as it really instilled trust.

All accommodation which forms part of The Luxury Travel Book is thoroughly reviewed in person prior to becoming part of the group, which means the properties are hand picked and personally assessed by the team, giving you full peace of mind when booking that all details in the description are 100% accurate and verified.

A huge plus of arranging your trip via The Luxury Travel Book is their bespoke app. We gained access to this prior to travelling and it was incredibly comprehensive. Not only did it have all of the key details of our booking, including the property layout, check in instructions and contact numbers should we need them, but our flight details were integrated and we received regular push notifications and updates. Not only this, there was a catalogue of local recommendations, restaurants, days out and activities and an online map of the local area. This was both super useful, and fun - my 7 year old really enjoyed looking through it with us and choosing places she wanted to see, so it was a lovely touch to give the children some insights into the destination beforehand.

Accommodation

Villa La Dolce stands as a testament to true Italian opulence and refinement, seamlessly blending timeless architecture with contemporary comforts. The views from the villa were astounding as it was nestled up high in a fantastic position - waking up on day one (having arrived late the night before) was so special. The air was fresh and clean and the mountains and Lake could be seen from our bedroom windows.

Villa La Dolce had some beautiful outdoor areas to relax - which although not perhaps synonymous with winter, they actually lent themselves well to mornings, sipping coffee in the sunshine of the glass orangery overlooking the garden. Come the Summer months, this spot would be fantastic for family gatherings next to the outdoor pool.

The interior of Villa La Dolce reflected Italian elegance. Each room was warm and cosy, had comfortable beds and luxurious bedding, with fresh fluffy towels provided and tasteful, classic furnishings. There was a real sense of it being a home from home, with stunning antiques and the odd family photo dotted around (we later found Villa La Dolce was the holiday home of a Milan based family) - a detail which actually made it all the more special.

The living room boasted a wood burning stove which was perfect for the evenings, as well as a TV and games area on the lower ground floor which lends itself to younger guests (and snooker loving adults!)

The kitchen was comprehensively equipped, complemented by modern (large) appliances which lent themselves to entertaining groups or for multi generational stays.

Service - The Luxury Travel Book

When we arrived, we were met by our wonderful concierge Iolanda, who was the epitome of professionalism and incredibly kind and helpful. A locally prepared lasagne and quiche had been provided for us which was nothing short of delicious, as well as drinks and breakfast items for the following morning. If you know you know - arriving somewhere with hungry children is rather cortisol inducing for parents! It took all of the work out of night one and the following morning, allowing us to totally relax straight away.

We were left comprehensive print outs of the ferry timetables and any seasonal closures we needed to be aware of, which honestly saved us a huge amount of time and googling. We also had a folder of local insights and recommendations which really elevated our experience - genuinely every restaurant we tried on the list was exceptional.

A lovely touch was a list of all of the child friendly activities going on in the area (The team went as far as to select only age appropriate activities for our girls.) This again, meant we had a wonderful starting point and some invaluable local knowledge to set us up. It felt so personalised and this meticulous planning of our travel arrangements, activities and dining reservations showcased their dedication to ensuring a memorable experience. This went above and beyond any villa rental we’d ever experienced and really set The Luxury Travel Book apart.

It is worth noting that The Luxury Travel Book has a plethora of local contacts in each location - we had access via our concierge to arrange beauty and spa treatments, haircuts, personal shoppers, jewellers (!) private helicopter and boat tours and babysitting. Everything was at our fingertips and Iolanda was responsive and helpful via Whatsapp throughout the stay.

Lake Como

January in Lake Como was still very much a relaxed, festive month and many of the Christmas and Epiphany events were in full swing. This meant there was lots to see and do, including dedicated ice skating rinks, which were ideal for children, as well as activities at local churches and libraries.

The reduced tourist crowds allowed us to explore the charming towns surrounding the lake at a leisurely pace and without having to plan too far ahead. We experienced the Lake primarily by utilising all of the local small ferries, which offered a superb, prompt and reasonably priced service and were buggy friendly. We hopped from Menaggio (closest terminal to the Villa) over to Bellagio and Varenna. It is also very easy to take a drive around the Lake and we did this one day, winding around via Dongo and Damaso, ending up in Colico for a Christmas Market. Many ferries allow cars on board if you prefer to take the car and have a longer adventure.

The only downside of winter in Como is a reduced offering of restaurants and shops, as locals were still enjoying their Christmas break, however we did not feel we were short of choice, it is more just something to be aware of if you’re travelling at this time of year.

Overall, we would absolutely visit again and would love to return during warmer months to enjoy everything Summer has to offer in the area.

Martinhal, Portugal: Family Spy Club Review

Family Spy Club - Maddie Donnelly - Fuss Free Family Travel Writer

Family spy club review: Martinhal lisbon oriente & martinhal sagres, Portugal

First and foremost, I would like to convey the feeling we’ve come away with as a family having just returned from a ten day trip with Martinhal. That feeling is: rested - and the fact that we’ve had an ACTUAL holiday - with children.

If you know, you know!

The end of the summer holidays and return to school, sparks many school drop off discussions with parents about what they got up to - an array of different trips from camping, to Airbnb stays, to all inclusive package getaways. A common theme from many of these travel stories, was the sense that despite me being told they had a great time - it more often than not came with a caveat; that it was hard work with the kids because of…(insert an array of reasons such as stone floors, no stair gates, thin walls, no A/C, lack of children's activities, sense of guilt for wanting to just lye and read a book and relax, having to plan all meals, little help from in laws who came along for the holiday) and the list could go on.

As we head towards October half term and our thoughts turn to our next holiday plans, we wanted to share our thoughts on Martinhal and chat to founder and travel expert Chitra Stern about how and why Martinhal began, and why it makes the perfect family getaway.

Roman Stern, CEO, Owner, Founder of Elegant Group & Chitra Stern, CEO, Owner, Founder of Martinhal Resorts and United Lisbon International School

Staying at Martinhal feels incredibly unique and very much tailored to the nuances of family life! How did you go about mapping out the Martinhal guest experience and do you feel being a mother yourself influenced an integral part of its creation?

Chitra Stern: Yes, we started to develop the business idea at the same time we started a family. Having our first child made us realise that sophisticated places were not welcoming children and child-friendly places didn’t offer the quality that we were used to. So we found a new niche in the luxury hospitality market and created a unique concept. Having four children before we opened our first resort in Sagres and living on site certainly helped us to develop the concept and details further!

What in your opinion, sets Martinhal apart from other family holidays?

Chitra Stern: The family-friendly ethos and details, offering a truly exclusive experience to each family member resulting in happy adults AND children at the end of their holiday. No one feels that they’ve had to compromise on the quality of the experience. Being not only child-friendly, but also parent-friendly, considering all that’s needed for a luxury holiday for the whole family without compromising on design, elegance, and quality is what sets us apart.

So what makes a good family holiday?

This is pretty subjective and there are so many factors at play, including children's ages (and how many of them you’ll be in charge of!) personalities, whether they are neurodiverse or having additional needs, individual specific likes and dislikes and the parents or caregivers sense of what they find relaxing and enjoyable. There is no one size fits all, but for us, flexibility is key and above all, EASE. We have two

children aged six and fourteen months, work incredibly hard in our day to day lives and jobs, so anything for an easy life, happy children, minimum fuss and effort is a huge win for us. Above all we also needed some time to ourselves, as much as we adore our children, spending time with each other too on holiday was very important.

Why Martinhal?

Martinhal was founded on the parents-matter-too principle of “Enjoy your cappuccino with the foam still on top”. This resonated. With our girls the ages they are, one of us is always running off after our smallest, eyes to the ground and surveying for danger while the other plays with and entertains our six year old while she discusses the ins and outs of just about everything in life. (Her latest interest is Snowshoe Hares and the Tundra…I’ll say no more…).

Martinhal currently has four destinations in Portugal, two in Lisbon; Martinhal Chiado in the centre and the newest addition, Martinhal Lisbon Oriente - as well as two in the Algarve - Martinhal Sagres and Martinhal Quinta Do Lago. We were fortunate enough to spend three nights at Lisbon Oriente which opened its doors in June 2023, as well as a five night visit to Martinhal Sagres.

When speaking to some other guests during our visit, there was a common theme of families wanting to return year after year. Why do you think Martinhal attracts this level of guest loyalty?

Chitra Stern: Loyalty is thanks to the excellent service and staff, combined with the amazing facilities. I think guests came back because we ensure hassle-free luxury family holidays and guests know they will feel the whole family has had a restful holiday with beautiful memories for all ages. At Martinhal, guests can enjoy time as a family, time as a couple, as well as “me time” achieving the right balance so each family member feels they have had the holiday they sought.

Martinhal Lisbon Oriente

Based fifteen minutes outside of Lisbon's centre, the newest addition to the Martinhal family is the grand and glamorous Lisbon Oriente, situated in The Parque das Nações (Park of Nations). This area is perfect for families - unlike Lisbon centre, which is beautiful but very hilly and cobbly so not as suitable for buggies and small legs, The Park of Nations offers a number of attractions within easy walking distance, including some beautiful gardens and parks, The Vasco da Gama Shopping Centre, Lisbon Oceanarium, The Pavillion of Knowledge science centre and the cities Telecabine Cable Car. We rode this as a return journey for around €25 Euro and it offered a super fun ride for the children and spectacular views over Lisbon and the Tagus River.

Lisbon Oriente is ideal for those looking for a city break with their family - whether that be a work trip or for pleasure. From a corporate perspective - Oriente is brilliantly set up, with a business suite consisting of meeting rooms and private call booths. It boasts an expertly staffed kids club to entertain the little ones, as well as a brand new gym and indoor and outdoor pools for leisure. Our two bedroom apartment was five star, fully equipped with everything you may need for your family and with the option to self cater, it provided us with great flexibility during our stay.

The Terrace Restaurant - Martinhal Lisbon Oriente Review

During our stay, the Martinhal team were thoughtful and attentive and always on hand - we were fully supported by the on site concierge who helped arrange everything from high chairs through to airport transfers and car hire. What was so wonderful was the sense that despite it being an incredibly smart, five star hotel, the children were never once frowned at for being loud, or dripping their swimming costumes in the lift on the way back from the pool! The atmosphere was accommodating and welcoming and it allowed us to fully enjoy everything the accommodation had to offer.

Lisbon Oriente is set within a green oasis, high walled garden which is hidden from the from the front facade. The Terrace restaurant, serving up exquisite, locally sourced food, is on the same level as the garden, meaning the children could run around outside safely while we ate and we could also enjoy drinks on the outdoor patio. Childcare is also available during your meals by pre-arrangement.

During our stay we noticed that technology played a crucial role in the guest experience - with the use of the MyMartinhal.com website. How has using this transformed the way guests are able enjoy their stay at Martinhal? How do you balance this with the more traditional face to face hospitality dynamic?

Chitra Stern: We have worked hard on My Martinhal to ensure that guests can access what is going on across the resort as we have so many different activities for the different age groups and for parents. In addition, there are different dining options and even themed dining events. My Martinhal enables guests to get information about all services available, check availability and make bookings quickly. Guests have become more convenience oriented and want to have the information at their fingertips from anywhere in the resort. However this will never replace the face to face and personal relationships with guests. Guests really create great relationships with our staff during their stay that make a difference.

Childcare

Special Touches - Gift in our babys cot when we arrived at Lisbon Oriente

My husband and I utilised the kids club facilities one afternoon (both of our daughters stayed together which was nice for their first session). I instantly felt at ease despite never having left the children with people I didn’t know - we found the team professional, kind, compassionate and reassuring and activities were tailored for both ages. My older daughter had so much fun that she didn’t want to leave.

These precious few hours meant we had the opportunity to head into Lisbon centre - we took E-Scooters along the river which was a fun way to explore and cost around €12 Euro with the Lime app, taking around 35 minutes. We visited the Time Out Food Market which was fantastic for food and drink and a fun atmosphere - I wouldn’t have said it's suitable for children owing to the noise and crowds (and toilet set up!) it would have been hard not to lose them! But for adults looking for a meal and night out it was great fun. We returned to Oriente via taxi which took under ten minutes.

Property Ownership

Martinhal Oriente was constructed during the ‘Golden Visa’ period, which is now coming to an end - but all apartments and villas are available to buy - meaning you can own some prime, expertly managed real estate with all of the benefits of a stay at Martinhal. This opportunity, alongside the newly opened Martinhal International School mean that if you’re considering a relocation to Lisbon it is a fantastic set up to transition your family. I must admit we were very tempted! Lisbon is brimming with culture, art and energy so it’s certainly worth exploring if you’re keen on a European move.

The opportunity of property ownership feels to be an important part of the Martinhal offering. How can families benefit from owning a Martinhal property?

Chitra Stern: It works differently according to each resort but we offer guaranteed return investment opportunities where owners can use the property for shorter periods in the year, if that is what they want, as well as residential options at Martinhal Oriente where people choose to live in branded residences with all the services.

Tell us a bit more about the Martinhal International School in Lisbon? How did the idea come about and do you think there will be further development in the education space?

Chitra Stern: I’ve been part of a government-led task force to attract foreign direct investment and during that process, I brought up the need for a quality international school within central Lisbon, in order to compete with other worldwide destinations. Education is crucial for families when deciding where to live or relocate to and Lisbon didn’t have enough International Schools to attract companies and families to reach their foreign direct investment goals. At the same time, we have identified an opportunity to breathe new life into a former educational facility still with its original art deco façade in Park of Nations, and though it was the perfect location for our United Lisbon International School, right next to Lisbon’s most modern neighbourhood.

Through extensive research selecting the right global industry partners, as well as having a large family of our own, my husband and I were able to apply our first-hand knowledge of the importance of education for international families relocating to a major capital city like Lisbon.

The school’s extensive state-of-the-art offering and facilities were completed and opened for operations in September 2020. It was the start of the transformative community that is Edu Hub Lisbon. Watch this space!

How has the recent economic climate affected Martinhal, if at all, when it comes to family holidays and those looking to move abroad?

Chitra Stern: For many years now, foreigners have been moving to Portugal for different reasons over the years.  Portugal has a temperate climate which appeals to many northern Europeans.  Safety and security issues have also played a role as people have migrated from cities such as Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo to Lisbon.  Lisbon features high on the Global Peace Index, making it one of the most attractive places to live. Geopolitics all over the world dictate that people want to find safer and stable places to live. People want to feel welcome where they move to and Portugal has a very open, tolerant and liberal society.

The recent economic climate post-COVID has been rocky all over the world. Portugal’s economic data have been quite good compared to other countries although there is a housing crisis here like in other countries.

Tourists feeling the crunch of the economic situation at home have started coming in other seasons other than summer to enjoy an early summer, an extension of their summer or winter sun as well.  Flights tend to be cheaper outside of August as well, so it makes sense.

Martinhal Sagres

The second part of our trip took us South to Martinhal Sagres, the southernmost point of Europe in Portugal's Algarve region. Nestled on the picturesque cliffs of Portugal's Algarve coast, Martinhal Sagres Beach Resort is a true gem that seamlessly blends luxury, family-friendliness, and natural beauty.

What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in guest expectations and demand over the past thirteen years since opening your flagship resort, Martinhal Sagres?

Chitra Stern: Well, the world has changed a lot, as have guests’ expectations. People want to feel the places they visit and the brands they use are aligned with their life philosophy. Sustainability and authenticity as well as exclusivity have become more important.  Guests want to keep going back to hotel brands they truly love and I believe Martinhal is a “love brand”.  We have also had to invest a lot in IT hardware and software over the years as families have multiple devices and need much more bandwidth as devices are used for entertainment, social media, business and communications. More guests are “working from anywhere” as well.

Accommodation

Martinhal Sagres offers a variety of accommodation options, from luxury hotel rooms to spacious villas. We stayed in one of the two bedroom Ocean Villas, which I’d say are probably the best location (easily accessible from the children's clubs, village square play area and pools - little legs in our family are not keen on walking far!) all whilst offering breathtaking views of the beach and sea. The rooms were both downstairs with an open plan living room, kitchen and terrace upstairs. This meant you could really enjoy the views in the mornings and evenings as the sun set. We found it to be clean and well-appointed, fully air conditioned and with all the amenities you'd expect from a luxury resort. In comparison to Oriente, it felt more of a beachside holiday home than a hotel apartment which was apt for the location and feeling of relaxation. The towel and bedding test were passed with flying colours - super soft and luxurious!

What is Martinhals approach to sustainability and environmental responsibility now and for the future?

Chitra Stern: Sustainability and environment have been on our priorities since the beginning and when building the projects. We have solar and photovoltaic panels, have worked on water desalination system in Sagres to be able to use it to water our gardens, that have been carefully planned with indigenous plants, hence resulting in the gardens having less water needs. Martinhal Sagres has been awarded the Green Key award for its environmental-friendly procedures and processes. There are a number of activities for recycling, single use plastic reduction, laundry policies as well as beach cleaning and local charity support. Martinhal Sagres specially has shown a great impact on the local community by creating jobs and bringing business to local commerce and activity partners.

The newly-built Martinhal Oriente stands as a visually stunning testament to the art of sustainable luxury architecture. Its design narrative revolves around the interplay between opulence and ecological consciousness, highlighting a commitment to responsible urban development. Within this architectural marvel lies a profound respect for nature, evident in its lush green façade with Portuguese olive trees gracing each balcony. Inside, biophilic design thrives, increasing guests’ connectivity to nature through direct and indirect natural elements and Portuguese plants, fostering an atmosphere of tranquillity and wellness. Deepening its commitment to water conservation, a meticulously designed central drip irrigation system waters the plants, sparing precious water resources.

The large, luminous spaces within the hotel owe their brilliance not only to the use of powerful low energy LED lighting, but also to the generous expanse of windows inviting the sun’s radiance to embrace every corner. This design choice not only minimises dependence on artificial lighting but also paints the interiors in the changing colours of the seasons with beautiful garden views. Moreover, the integration of solar panels contributes to the use of renewable energy to power the building, an infinite energy source that creates no harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Martinhal Lisbon Oriente boasts a sophisticated central control system underpinned by the cutting-edge Internet of Things (IoT) technology, where a KNX system orchestrates lighting, energy, and water seamlessly, empowering users for resource optimisation.

In line with our values, Martinhal Lisbon Oriente finds its place within Parque das Nações, a beacon of sustainable living. This modern neighbourhood encapsulates the future of urban planning with its energy efficient Climaespaço heating and cooling system, and efficient waste collection through a pneumatic vacuum suction system exemplifying a commitment to a cleaner world.

Service

The staff at Martinhal Sagres truly shine and we couldn’t fault the service. They are not only courteous and attentive but also genuinely warm and welcoming. On our second from last night our baby daughter was very sick in the night (that feeling of doom sets in as you think about having to travel home!) and at 1am we realised we had no bottled water. One call to the concierge and within 5 minutes one of the team came to the door with bottles of water, fresh towels and sheets. We also got a courtesy call the next day to check on her to see if she needed to see the on site medical team (thankfully she was absolutely fine!) This service was just excellent and made us feel truly looked after.

The Martinhal team were all incredibly knowledgeable, helpful and thoughtful throughout our trip, both at Lisbon Oriente and in Sagres. How do you maintain this seamless level of service and brand consistency throughout all sites?

Chitra Stern: We have a strong company culture that has been built organically over the years.  We invest a lot in the recruitment and training processes. There are several internal marketing with communication efforts, obviously. Employee loyalty is something we’ve worked hard on since the beginning and we have created a strong Martinhal family recruited and retained with our brand values in mind.

One thing parents do worry about when away is medical facilities and the nearest hospital - so for the worriers out there who like to cover all bases (us!) there is a nurse on site who is always around for immediate medical first aid. Vila do Bispo is 10 Minutes from Sagres and can provide an ambulance and the nearest public hospital is in Lagos (30 min drive) in addition to Alvor (40 minutes drive).

Family-Friendly

The "Raposa Kids Club" with it’s iconic fox mascot offers an array of age-appropriate clubs and schedule of activities for children throughout the week. When we arrived we were gifted very sweet little fox toys for the girls, sun hats, a backpack and Martinhal bottle which the children loved. Due to the size and the capacity of the Sagres resort, our girls were in two different clubs but this meant my 6 year old came away having met some lovely new friends to play with, all her age.

The baby club takes infants from 6 months old, which is much younger than many other holiday providers and for this fact alone I’d say that if you have babies under twelve months or just above, you can confidently leave them in great hands and enjoy some time to yourself. They had very very charming little baby outings each day around the resort in six seater buggies, it was great they weren’t just indoors the entire session and just felt more enriching (which alleviated any parent guilt for having them in clubs!) The older children's clubs also organised a huge variety of outdoor activities including swimming sessions throughout the week to keep things varied and entertaining.

The playgrounds, four swimming pools, and secluded beach access all contribute to the family-friendly atmosphere and it's all within such easy reach so great to mix up the holiday each day. All restaurants were near play areas so the children could entertain themselves, within view, whilst adults finished their meal.

Can you share any notable family stories or memorable moments since Martinhal began?

Chitra Stern: Oh! We have had so many! We have worked hard on celebrating family events at Martinhal – for example my parents-in-law’s milestone birthdays, or my parents 50th wedding anniversary, our own milestone birthdays, our children’s birthdays. These events have brought together family and friends from all over the world sometimes and we have created wonderful memories. These celebrations are so important, especially since COVID.  During COVID, we held onto some of these memories and moments while we longed to see each other again.

We also make it a point to celebrate each opening with an inauguration party. It is important for the stakeholders as well as us as founders and CEOs.

Portugal is clearly close to your heart and In 2019 you delivered a TEDX talk about why Portugal is Trending. Do you foresee Martinhal expanding into other countries at some point in the future? Finally, what is your vision and plans for the future of Martinhal?

Chitra Stern: Yes, I do foresee Martinhal expanding to other countries. It is in fact a responsibility to do so as many guests have asked when we are going to open in the rest of Europe and in the USA!

Food and Drink

Martinhal Sagres offers three main restaurants, O Terraço, with its panoramic ocean views, serving more traditional Portuguese cuisine, while As Dunas Beach Bar and Restaurant which specialises in seafood just steps from the beach. It offered daily catch specials to choose from and was our personal favourite of the three! Os Gambozinos is located in the village square (a bit of an epicentre for the exodus post-kids club!) and this offered the genius of a children's buffet, at a perfect, edible temperature (read: no hangry children or frantic blowing on the food to cool it down, so they could eat immediately.) Within the village there was also the more laid back option of the Josper grill - and poolside you could also grab a bite.

Most mornings we ate at O Terraço which offered a huge and diverse breakfast buffet, with a wide selection of fresh and locally sourced ingredients. Prosecco was also unlimited should you be so inclined on a morning!

Let’s talk food! How does Martinhal cater for all family members during their stay? (both adventurous and perhaps not so adventurous!) This is often such a big sticking point when families decide to embark on a trip away!

Chitra Srern: Gastronomy is key for Martinhal, good quality and wide range of options for various needs and tastes are part of the Martinhal experience. Based on fresh and seasonal ingredients, we offer a variety of food options through our restaurant concepts. Our menus include vegetarian and vegan options and pay high attention to dietary restrictions (allergies and intolerances). Our restaurants not only offer childrens menus but also fresh purees for babies from 6 months of age. As for drinks, Martinhal invites guests to discover the very best of Portuguese wines as well as some signature mocktails and cocktails.

Activities

Whether you're an adventure enthusiast or looking to unwind, Martinhal Sagres has you covered. The resort offers a range of activities, from water sports and tennis to yoga and spa treatments. The Martinhal Surf School is perfect for those looking to catch some waves, and the nearby nature reserves provide ample opportunities for hiking and exploring the Algarve's natural beauty.

In summary, our stay at Martinhal Sagres Beach Family Resort exceeded our expectations in every way. This is not just a resort; it's a haven for families. The combination of exceptional service, family-friendly amenities, delicious cuisine, and the awe-inspiring natural beauty of the Algarve makes Martinhal Sagres a destination worth returning to - we can't recommend it enough, and we're already planning our next visit.

If having read all of this one of our readers are now considering booking a stay with Martinhal, how would you describe the experience they may have? Why should they choose to have their next trip with Martinhal?

Chitra Stern: They will certainly enjoy their time at Martinhal! Which Martinhal depends on what experience they want – beach, golf, city or an urban resort! They will definitely enjoy the different culinary experiences at Martinhal – especially in Martinhal Sagres and Martinhal Lisbon Oriente.  Creating #MartinhalMemories are what we are about!

Dylan Coastal Resort: Family Spy Club Review

Dylan Coastal Resort on Wales’ beautiful South Coast forms part of Luxury Lodges portfolio of destinations.

Situated in the breathtaking location of Carmarthenshire, this incredibly family friendly, premium resort offers a luxurious and unforgettable coastal getaway.

We had the pleasure of visiting for three nights as a family of four, staying in the Sonnet pet friendly lodge - as we were joined by our seven year old Lurcher, Wilma. She was incredibly pleased to be coming with us - she didn’t sign up for the two children who have joined the family in the past six years so is often (sadly!) sidelined for holidays. Those with a dog in the family that predates the children, may understand / sympathise here!

The Resort is named after the famous association with the Welsh poet and writer Dylan Thomas. He lived in Laugharne from 1949 until his death in 1953. Thomas drew inspiration from the town's beauty and tranquillity and it is said that Laugharne influenced much of his work. The Boathouse, Thomas's former home, is now a museum dedicated to his life and work. We stopped by his writing shed during our walk along the coastal path, which is set up as his desk once was back in the day, with writing and pictures surrounding it which was a fun little historical tick for our six year old!

Dylan Coastal Resort

Arrival

On the day of arrival, we were greeted by the team at Dylan Coastal Resort via text message - they made us feel immediately welcomed, with all of the information we needed regarding check in and our surrounding facilities. They offer a remote check-in process, which we found smooth and efficient, ensuring a seamless start to the stay. It worked particularly well as we had a long journey and arrived fairly late into the evening so it saved lots of admin late at night with tired children.

The Setting

The resort itself is quiet and tranquil, nestled amidst stunning natural surroundings, with panoramic views of the coast. The beach at the bottom of the resort is lovely for walks straight from your door, with buggy friendly pathways all the way down. Just a note that it isn’t sandy, so not bucket and spade worthy (it’s quite a marshy, muddy beach). Saying this, our 6 year old still happily got stuck in with her wellies on and found some shells and sea creatures for the collection.

We took with us our Thule toddler backpack for our 11 month old daughter which was fantastic - if you don’t have one I can highly recommend it for trips away. It’s incredibly lightweight and has great storage capacity underneath it for all you need on a walk with children (nappy changing bag, hats, suncream, drinks and snacks for luring them home).

It’s Wales so read: Hills. The resort and surrounding area is hilly and use of your car on site is discouraged for environmental and congestion reasons. When I went to the gym I quite enjoyed the hilly power walk as a warm up, but for the children, we utilised the very handy electric concierge car (with a kind and helpful chauffeur on hand!) which was free of charge and super handy when taking the children back to the lodge after a swim. All whinging was curtailed - so a huge win.

The Lodge

Dylan Coastal Resort - Luxury Lodges

The accommodations at Dylan Coastal Resort are perfect for families, groups or even couples. The setup was a spacious, beautifully designed and well equipped holiday lodge with all the amenities you could need for self catering, laundry and organising the family. We requested a dog bed, and bowls for Wilma, plus a travel cot and high chair for our baby which were waiting for us when we arrived. This was fantastic as it saved space in the car. Just be aware that you’ll need to bring your own cot bedding and cot mattress, I’d also recommend taking along baby friendly plates, bowls and cutlery.

I feel the best judge of a lovely accommodation can be measured by the towel and bed linen test. Both, I am so so happy to share, were clean, crisp, fluffy and luxurious. We were also provided with two lovely cosy dressing gowns and slippers to lounge in.

The attention to detail was evident in every aspect of the lodge. The beds were very comfortable, the bathrooms had lovely showers and a bath with great water pressure (I know you may find me odd for mentioning this but we’ve been away to lodges in the past which dribble water, so bath time takes a while!!) I absolutely loved the private terrace upstairs where we could relax and soak in the amazing sea air and views with a cup of coffee in the mornings. The hot tub on the veranda was also a super addition and was so nice to unwind in the evenings with a glass of (very kindly provided - champagne!) as a couple after the children had gone to bed.

Dylan Coastal Resort Facilities

One of the highlights of our stay was the resort's extensive range of facilities. The onsite Milk Wood House spa offers a variety of indulgent treatments from an express 15 mins to 1hr+ , providing the perfect opportunity for relaxation and rejuvenation on any time scale. The infinity pool, which was a glorious mineral pool (no chlorine, the resort is very eco conscious and limits the use of chemicals everywhere) and adjoining outdoor infinity hot tub went down an absolute storm with both us and the children. Swimming with amazing views over the bay, with a huge sauna and steam room and rainforest and ice showers, as well as a dedicated relaxation room. Towels are there for you to use so you only need to bring

along your swim gear - there weren’t children’s pool toys or equipment there so if your little ones need armbands or other floating entertainment then do bring them along.

Despite it being very smart, I never once felt uncomfortable about having the children there playing and making noise. Everyone was so laid back and welcoming, even when my daughter chatted endlessly with the receptionist about every medical ailment that every member of the family has had over the past 4 years (snotty noses, chickenpox, spots…you get the gist.) She was so patient and lovely. Total saint.

I had one gym session during my stay (laziness prevailed on day one) and I had the place to myself. I have no idea if this is the norm but it was a real treat. The fitness centre is amazingly well equipped with the latest Technogym Artis equipment. The best bit, like the pool, was the incredible view looking out with floor to ceiling glass panoramic views of the sea and hillsides. There wasn’t a huge amount of floor space for mat work but as I was solo in there it wasn’t an issue. The machinery more than made up for it (in fact I wish I had such nice equipment at my local gym, I was totally spoilt for choice).

There was another saving grace just around the corner from our lodge - an onsite playground. This was surprisingly big and well equipped for a resort playground and easily accessible. Perfect to take the children off for some time while the other half relaxed and visa versa.

Food

The Milk Wood restaurant and bar hosted us on our second night. The stairs are steep as this is the floor up from the spa, but there is a lift for buggies and wheelchairs if required, and there is plenty of space upstairs for both, and good access. We didn’t take Wilma but there is a dog friendly area on the terrace if you did have your four legged friend with you.

The menu was beautifully varied, with a lovely selection of farm to table dishes including vegan options. Ingredients are all locally sourced and the attentive service made dining a really enjoyable and relaxing experience (despite the two children in tow!). For starters we enjoyed local asparagus and truffled goats cheese and crayfish cocktail with wasabi. Our mains consisted of delicious fresh seabass and rostis and my husband had a halloumi flatbread - the children's menu was simple and tasty with generous portions. All dishes were beautifully presented and full of flavour. I really recommend eating here if you go, it was delicious.

Local Attractions

The location of Dylan Coastal Resort is ideal for exploring the beauty of the surrounding area. From charming coastal towns to rugged landscapes, there is no shortage of attractions for families. The resort team was incredibly helpful in providing recommendations.

Gwili Railway: Gwili Railway is a heritage railway nestled in the picturesque Gwili Valley, this historic railway is very nostalgic - it is a beautifully restored steam and diesel train which takes you on a scenic ride through the stunning Welsh countryside. As you travel along the track, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of rolling hills, meandering rivers, and charming rural landscapes. The railway also hosts special events and themed experiences, such as Santa train rides and evening dining experiences, adding an extra touch of magic to your visit.

Folly Farm: This is super for children of all ages, it has a vintage fairground, zoo and lots of farm animals. There is plenty to do and it’s an easy all in one day out.

Pendine Sands: Just a short drive from Dylan Coastal Resort, (I believe its the closest sandy beach, took around 12 mins) Pendine Sands is a stunning seven-mile stretch of beach. It is famous for its association with land speed records in the early 20th century. You can take a leisurely stroll along the shore, build sandcastles, or even try land yachting on the expansive sands. We slightly mis-timed the tide coming in but even so, we had a great afternoon here. There was also lots of wind surfing going on!

Pembrey Country Park: Situated a few miles to the east of the resort, Pembrey Country Park is a huge recreational area spanning over 500 acres. It offers beautiful woodland walks, cycling trails, and a spectacular beach. You can also enjoy activities like horse riding, tobogganing, and exploring the park's historic sites, including Pembrey's 14th-century castle.

National Botanic Garden of Wales: A short drive north will lead you to the National Botanic Garden of Wales. This expansive garden features a wide variety of plant collections, including rare and exotic species. There are themed gardens, glasshouses, and even a tropical butterfly house. The garden also hosts regular events and exhibitions.

Laugharne Castle: History enthusiasts will appreciate a visit to Laugharne Castle, This 13th century castle is the ‘brown as owls’ castle beloved by Dylan Thomas, Laugharne’s most famous resident. He wrote ‘Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog’ in the castle summer house perched above glorious views of the Taf estuary.

Carmarthen: The county town of Carmarthenshire, Carmarthen, is within reach and offers a mix of historical attractions and modern amenities. You can explore Carmarthen Castle, visit St. Peter's Church, or browse the shops and boutiques in the town centre. There are also several museums, including the Carmarthenshire County Museum, which showcases the area's heritage. There is a Market on Saturdays here too which is worth a visit.

Outdoor Activities: The surrounding countryside offers opportunities for all outdoor fun such as hiking, cycling, and birdwatching if that’s your thing! We saw some amazing birds of prey, sadly my ability to identify them isn’t quite up to scratch though so I wouldn’t be able to tell you which! You can explore the scenic landscapes of the Brecon Beacons National Park or venture along the Wales Coast Path, which runs through the region, offering stunning views of the coastline. We didn’t go this far on this visit as we only had a couple of days but we spoke to another family who had been there for a week who said they had been out and about with the children exploring and it was brilliant.

These are just a few of the many attractions and activities available but whether you're interested in history, natural beauty, or outdoor adventures, you'll find plenty to explore and enjoy during your stay. The resort's concierge service can provide further recommendations and assist with arranging activities to make the most of your visit.

My Six Year Old Daughters Top 3 Favourite Things (Her words)

  1. The swimming pool

  2. Having chocolate icecream

  3. Yummy food, I liked the chips (!)

If I went again I would…

Definitely order a supermarket delivery, to save time driving to get food and organise meals. It took around 1.5hours out of the day to go back and forth as the main supermarkets are around a 25 minute drive. There are however local shops if you just need to pick up some small extras. If I’d been staying for longer I probably would have meal prepped some food and planned beforehand, so we could have saved even thinking about cooking and what to eat.

If you’re not keen on cooking or meal prepping, the restaurant is wonderful and had plenty of choice if you wanted to save all hassle of course.

Verdict

Overall, our experience at Dylan Coastal Resort was nothing short of exceptional. The combination of stunning surroundings, luxurious accommodation, and impeccable service made for an unforgettable stay and we loved that feeling of our own self catering private space, but with access to top hotel type facilities at Milk Wood House. Whether you're looking for a family getaway or a peaceful retreat, I highly recommend it for a coastal escape.

Dylan Coastal Resort is part of Luxury Lodges, which was established in 2015 with the aim of catering to the needs of busy families in the UK, who were searching for holidays that were both practical and stylish. Recognising the absence of options in the market that fulfilled these requirements, Sharon Hurley, a mother and entrepreneur, was motivated to create a series of resorts that offered the ultimate desire of busy families – quality time spent together, free from the burdens of daily life.

It is worth mentioning that these holiday lodges are available to buy too - so if you’re keen to try them out before you invest then it’s a super way to dip your toe in the water for second home ownership. Luxury Lodges also offer accommodation in Cornwall and The Lake District.

Stays at Dylan Coastal Resort start from £389. For more information or to book, click here.

We will definitely be back!

The 'S' word...Tips for Getting your Baby to Sleep

Are you looking for some tips for getting your baby to sleep?

We’ve put together a comprehensive guide, whether you’re at home or on holiday!

The elusive ‘S’ word. Sleep. Probably THE most talked about element of parenthood, with parents of young children honing in on nap lengths, night wakings, the split nights phenomenon, bedtime routines and early wake ups. Lack of sleep has recently been linked to higher instances of postnatal depression, and the effects on your body and mind can be far reaching. Let's not forget, sleep deprivation has been used for centuries as a form of torture and interrogation for prisoners of war for a reason! It can affect everything from your mental wellbeing and clarity, to your physical health, your work and your relationships.

All is not lost - FSC has some top tips from expert sleep consultants and tried and tested products to help navigate your baby's first year of sleep.

The Early Days: Understanding Newborn Sleep

Those early newborn days are often a mixture of long, sleepy cuddles with your tiny new bundle and frantic periods of soothing their cries. It can sometimes be hard to know what they need and what they want, and this is often when sleep feels very challenging.

“After birth, babies suddenly feel the cold, they understand touch (particularly if hands are cold), they have unfamiliar smells and sounds, lights which they have never experienced before and they have primal brains as the frontal cortex and other areas of their brain have not yet developed,” explains The Eco Midwife. “Babies naturally feed and wake more at night for these primal reasons and regular waking is suggested as a safety mechanism for babies as well as a feeding reason (as oxytocin and milk production is highest in the early hours, usually between 2 and 4am)”

If settling your newborn at any point during the night or day is a challenge for you, the Eco Midwife has a list of 8 tips to settle your baby during the postpartum period period

Understanding the science behind newborn sleep and what is possible for very young babies developmentally can help you establish realistic expectations of what is ‘normal’ and achievable for them. The Daddy Sleep Consultant talks you through this in his article, ‘Everything you need to know about your newborn’s sleep’, which focuses on a newborn’s sleep cycle, awake windows and how this changes as they reach the 3-4 month mark.

Some items to help along the way include:

  • A bedside cot, or cot suitable for your bedroom
You may have spent time excitedly preparing your baby's new nursery, but extensive research recommends it is safest to have your baby sleep in your room next to you for the first six months of their life. The Shnuggle Air Bedside Crib serves not only those early days (0-6m) but has a handy conversion kit available (to purchase separately) which turns it into a full size cot for when they transition up to a main cot. The bedside cot includes the mattress (not many do!) which we feel makes it an overall great purchase due to its versatility and value for money. It’s also pretty stylish and height adjustable for your bed, with a drop down, breathable mesh side for easy access during those night time feeds or wakes.

We use our Travel Glow Dreaming Pink Noise machine every time we travel. Great little essential!

  • A Monitor
Always useful during nap time if you are in a different area of the house. There are many monitors on the market which range from budget to super high tech, but opt for one that you feel offers you the most reassurance. Some parents prefer a camera view and for other parents, knowing their baby is awake from hearing them is sufficient. Your choice will also depend on how big your home is and how far the connection reaches - so be mindful of this when you make a purchase.

  • A white or pink noise machine

Some babies find it tricky to settle when it’s quiet, but are lulled by the womb-like sounds of white or pink noise. With older babies and children, the opposite can be true and sudden noises outside or around the house can disturb their sleep. White or pink noise provides a constant, reassuring sound that blocks out external noise and can lead to peaceful sleep. There are many machines on the market, but The Daddy Sleep Consultant recommends having one that can be plugged in and left on all night so you don’t have to keep switching it back on again! Glow Dreaming offer an innovative 5-in-1 sleep aid which includes pink noise, a NASA utilised red LED light (which promotes the sleep hormone melatonin), a humidifier and medicinal grade essential oil which wafts gently around the room. It’s a favourite of ours as not only can it be plugged in and left on, it also has a rechargeable, compact and portable travel version which is perfect for holidays and weekends away at grandparents houses!

  • Dummies
Whether you are for or against dummies, designs have changed significantly in recent years so you may wish to consider an orthodontic approved dummy, which the Enchanted Nanny, Danielle Manton-Kelly considers a God-send! You can read about Danielle’s pros and cons for dummy use in this helpful article. Nuk do a great range of orthodontic dummies, available here.

  • Easy Access Sleep Suits
Don’t underestimate the power of an easily accessible baby sleepsuit! New parents have all been there - it’s the middle of the night and your baby needs a nappy change, but you know it’s going to mean a very awake baby at the end of it. If you have not yet mastered a swift nappy change, a Zipster Sleepsuit can help you along the way. WE LOVE these butter soft bamboo suits which sport a huge range of snazzy designs are not only cute but very practical. Instead of battling with hundreds of poppers in the dark, they live up to their name and quickly and easily zip up (or down) with a two way zip. Sibling and parent matching sets are also available which make for thoughtful gifts.

Establishing routines in the early months

Sleep consultants say that it can be useful to introduce good sleep routines even during the very early months to help your baby establish healthy sleep habits from the get-go. Although it can take babies 12 weeks or more to develop a circadian rhythm, there are things that you can do to help this along.

During awake times, try to make sure your baby gets exposure to lots of daylight. This can be outdoors (make sure it’s indirect sunlight) or indoors (open the curtains up when waking your baby in the morning and from naps) 15-20 minutes will suffice as a minimum if you don’t want to spend hours outside but fresh air and daylight is always beneficial.

In the lead up to bedtime, keep activity levels low and the lights dim in order to create a calming and relaxing environment conducive to sleep. If you wanted to, you could begin a bedtime routine consisting of a few activities such as bath time, a gentle baby massage or a story or song.

If bath time is a regular part of your routine, we can highly recommend the Schnuggle Bath range. These baby baths have been incredibly popular since they launched and for good reason. Unlike traditional baby baths which can often be slippery and don’t support your baby, these have a little ‘bum bump’ at the bottom which helps your baby stay stable, upright and comfortable. Less awkward than constantly having to lean over and certainly better for parents backs!  They also offer a toddler bath which is an ideal next step up when your baby is confidently sitting upright. We give an eco thumbs up to this one as it also saves water if you didn't want to fill the entire bath.

Equally important to daylight exposure, is trying to make it as dark as possible for your child during naps and at bedtime. Olivia Mulcahy says “Darkness is essential for sleep in order to allow the production and release of melatonin, which is only produced when there is darkness. As baby’s circadian rhythm matures, a key factor in how their sleep is regulated is exposure to light or to darkness. The problem with light when we are teaching babies to settle and resettle is that it enters the eyes and triggers the release of hormones such as serotonin which tell baby, it is time to wake up. Sleep is definitely easier for baby when the room is dark, so please don’t under-estimate the effect this will have on successfully sleep coaching your baby.”

We tried out some fantastic Blackout Blinds from Pure Earth Collection which are an ample size for most windows with suction cups so they can be attached and moved around easily. These can be used both at home and for travel so are a great investment and a real sleep essential, especially during the spring and summer when evenings begin to get lighter.

Naps on the Go

If you’re juggling more than one child and perhaps have to opt for more napping on the go in the stroller, consider a SnoozeShade. The Snoozeshade is a revolution when it comes to buggy naps and allows for darkness, just like a blackout blind but is air permeable. These come in a selection of different sizes (newborn - 6 months and 6 months+) to fit different strollers, it can even accommodate double buggys so one child can nap while the other is awake if necessary!

If your baby likes motion to keep them asleep in the stroller, the award winning Rockit Baby Rocker is another firm favourite of ours. This clever little device clips to the side of your buggy and gently vibrates side to side to mimic pushing back and forth by hand. Free hands = more time to chat and have a coffee in peace while your little one stays sound asleep for longer! With an RRP of £39.99 this is well worth a purchase.

If your baby tends to nod off in the car, ditch the usual blankets (which often get kicked off and are impossible to re-position mid-journey!) and invest in a baby wrap. The Kura Organic Baby wrap is not only a universal fitting car seat wrap but also fits 3 and 5 point harness buggies, moses baskets and bassinets so is incredibly versatile. We adore ours, super soft and cosy, easy popper buttons and they make a gorgeous (and useful!) gift for new parents too!

What are TOG ratings?

When looking at sleeping bags for your baby you’ll notice they often have a ‘TOG’ rating. This is a unit of measure for the thermal resistance of textiles so the “Thermal Overall Grade”. Essentially, the tog rating or weight of a baby sleeping bag determines its thickness and consequently how warm it keeps your child. The higher the tog rating (weight) the warmer the baby sleeping bag is. Many baby sleeping bags on the market contain polyester wadding (and therefore micro plastics) and if this is something you’re conscious of then it’s worth exploring Bamboo products. Pure Earth Collection have a gorgeous range of bamboo sleeping bags which help babies regulate their body temperature - it also means one sleeping bag is suitable for all seasons. They offer a 1 tog baby sleeping bag suitable for room temperatures from 13-27°C. We tried them and were really impressed. They are incredibly well made, soft and luxurious and we loved the fact that they have a clip on comforter. These bags are designed to fit from 3m – 3y, so you don’t need to constantly buy new ones as your little one grows -making them both economical and environmentally sustainable. As a side note, if you are feeling a little envious of your babys beautiful cosy sleeping bag - Pure Earth Collection also offer both child and adult matching robes which are equally as soft and luxurious as the sleeping bags.

Let’s talk about naps!

From how long and how often a baby should nap, to what babies should wear when they do, day time naps can be just as difficult to navigate as the nights.

Here are some common questions and some articles written by experts with all the answers:

“My baby is taking chronic short naps!”

The Fox and the Moon Sleep consultants advise on what to do if your little one’s naps are frequently shorter than 30 minutes and therefore not getting the chance to have restorative sleep.

“What should my baby or toddler wear for their daytime nap?”

The Daddy Sleep Consultant shares his tips on how to make your little one comfortable for their day time nap to ensure optimal sleep.

“How can I extend my little one’s nap time?”

Joanne Lozman has some good advice for extending your little one’s nap time so that they can connect their sleep cycles by themselves.

“What are the optimal timings for my baby’s nap?”

Olivia, from the Dream House Sleep Consultancy, has put together this handy video explaining everything you need to know about nap times for your baby according to their age.

“When should I transition my baby from 2 naps to 1?”

Helping your baby transition from 3 naps to 2, and then from 2 down to 1 until they’re no longer napping at all (sob!) is something many parents struggle with. The Daddy Sleep Consultant has put together this comprehensive article about nap transitions that covers everything you need to know about nap transitions from 4 months to 4 years!

‘Sleep Training’ and the quest for independent sleep

As with anything baby related, there are many opinions and schools of thought about how to encourage your baby to sleep through the night and at what age this is possible or realistic. ‘Sleep training’ has received mixed press over the years, and many parents are left feeling confused about what sleep training actually involves, whether it works and what the alternatives might be.

As with any milestone, teaching your baby to sleep independently can involve quite a few tricks of the trade, and Alissa Pemberton has several of them up her sleeve, which she covers here. From offering your little one close contact for reassurance, to getting babies used to their sleep space during the day, and even accepting that there will almost certainly be a few bumps in the road, Alissa has some top advice to help your find an independent sleep strategy that works for you and your little one.

The Lullaby Trust recommends sharing a room with your baby for at least the first 6 months of their life. If you choose to move your baby into their own room after this, you will want to create the perfect environment for them to ensure the best night’s sleep. One element you may not have considered for your baby or little one is a floor bed instead of a cot or toddler bed, which Alissa Pemberton says can be a real game changer for ensuring optimum sleep all round for the whole family.
