Product Review: KURA Organic Baby Wrap

In my ultimate downloadable packing list I mention a carseat wrap as a great addition to your family holiday with a baby. Never heard of one? Well here’s all you need to know…

Whether you’re travelling by car all the way to your destination, driving to the airport, or perhaps hiring a vehicle on the other side - car journeys with children can be a challenge. In fact, if I’m being totally honest, it’s something I’ve always found pretty stressful. My eldest daughter had awful reflux when she was a baby and we lived in the countryside, around a twenty minute drive from anything I’d categorise as civilisation. (Ok this is a slight exaggeration, we had a corner shop, but I’m a DFL [Down from London] and used to instant convenience, so the rural move was a culture shock of sorts) This meant I often endured journeys consisting of multiple stops in laybys, whilst I panicked, watching her in the rear mirror to check she wasn’t being sick and frantically singing “Alice the Camel” 746 times to soothe her cries.

Aside from the reflux, car journeys can still be hairy. We’ve all experienced those danger naps - when we’re driving for less than half an hour and desperate for our tiny one NOT to fall asleep so we don’t throw off their carefully orchestrated schedule, but within seconds they are nodding off. OR we’re faced with the alternative: we smugly set off during a designated nap time, confident in the thought of peaceful drive ahead, and sleep eludes them the entire way. Until, of course, you pull in at your destination, fatigued and hoarse (from singing) and turn to find them soundly snoozing, meaning you are left sitting on the driveway for the next forty minutes.

As you can tell, I love (snort) travelling by car with my children. Ok, I’m the problem - it’s me.

The Kura Organic Baby Wrap

One thing I never worry about anymore, is snuggling my littlest up in her car seat. I have the Cybex Priam travel system which includes the ZI carseat and Isofix base. This clips off the base directly to my Priam frame - so I can move her from car to buggy seamlessly without waking her if necessary. The game changer with baby #2 was my gorgeous organic cotton, Kura carseat wrap. No more did I battle with blankets tucked in around her little legs as she vigorously wriggled and kicked them off. Blankets and babys are much like socks and babys, they never, ever, stay put for long.

The Kura wrap is a product I now ALWAYS recommend to anyone looking for the perfect gift for new parents or parents-to-be as a baby shower gift. I was gifted mine and it got non-stop use and tonnes of comments from passers by. If you’re looking for the perfect gift for your pregnant friend or colleague - this is a great choice.

Sizing and Fit

The Kura Baby Wrap is versatile, perfect for your buggy as well as the car seat and has universal fit, being 3 and 5 point harness friendly. It is attached using velcro, so very manoeuvrable between car seat and pushchair (If you didn’t have a travel system.) There are two size options currently, 0-6 months (up to 8kg) and 6-12 months (up to 10kg). I found the 6-12 month size generous (in a good way for longevity) but of course it depends on how tall and leggy your little babe is as to whether toes start to poke out the bottom as they grow.

Design, Material and Care

Kura products are made using 100% GOTS Organic Cotton ~ this is always music to my ears as it’s a planet friendly brand. The outer fabric is a beautiful woven knit and the lining fabric is a super buttery soft, brushed interlock jersey fabric, which is non-toxic and uses baby safe OEKO-TEX standard inks, meaning it is safe to be worn directly against your baby’s delicate skin.

My favourite part? Poppers - with natural, coconut shell buttons. Popper buttons offer up a quick and easy fastening, securing baby into snuggle mode quickly and effortlessly. They are also pretty firm poppers which didn’t come undone whilst my daughter was moving around.

I’m pleased to share these are also machine washable at 30C - I’ve washed mine quite a few times and it has not lost it’s softness or quality.

You’ll find these come in an array of lovely natural colours - many of which are unisex, which is another reason they make a great pregnancy gift.

Verdict

If you’ve got this far, you’ll have realised I’m a big fan of this product. Since I got my wrap, the range has expanded so do have a browse…

I’d give it a 9/10 - only because I wish they did some bigger sizes for the toddler stage!

If you’re looking for some guidance around how long is safe for your baby to travel in their carseat - read my article here which has advice from the experts.

Not an ad, genuinely love this product!

How long should your baby be in a car seat or travel system?

Have you sometimes been hesitant about taking longer trips with your baby, because you’re worried about how long they would have to spend in their car seat? You’re not alone and it’s a subject with mixed advice.

The Lullaby Trust Car Seat Factsheet recommends no more than 2 hours at a time:

“There is no published evidence which sets out how long babies should be kept in a car seat when travelling. However, infant healthcare professionals, safety experts and most car manufacturers recommend that babies should not be in a car seat for longer than 2 hours at a time and they should be taken out frequently. If your trip involves driving for long periods of time, you should stop for regular breaks. Not only will this allow you to stretch your own legs but you can check on your baby, take them out of the car seat and let them stretch and move around.

Ideally, a second adult should travel in the back of the car with your baby, or if travelling alone use a mirror to keep an eye on your baby. If your baby changes its position and slumps forward, then you should immediately stop and take them out of the car seat and reposition them before continuing on your journey.”

Sally Hills-Davis, Paediatric Occupational Therapist and founder of The Practical Child has the following advice:

Travel systems – Prams, buggies, pushchairs, whatever you like to call them, have improved no end over the years.

There are now all-terrain buggies, jogging buggies, lightweight buggies and rear and forward-facing buggies, as well as the three in one travel system. The range is so extensive, I often wonder how on earth people choose!

Today, I am going to discuss the travel system. Many of these have a base with the ability to interchange the pushchair, carrycot and car seat. This can be a great product to buy, with the benefit that if the baby is asleep, you do not have to wake them up to move them.

In addition to this, rather than having to take additional equipment like a baby bouncer, you already have a car seat/carrycot, that they can stay in! Read on to find out more.

The pros and cons of travel systems

These travel systems are great, however, they do have a downside! It can be really too easy to keep your child in one position for long periods, without really thinking about it.

It is so easy to go from school drop off (for a sibling), with the car seat attachment on the buggy base, back home again (with baby still asleep), then baby wakes up, he or she is fed, changed, then back out in the car, (so back in car seat) you drive to the shops, place the car seat into the trolley, do the shopping, get back in the car and then home!

Sometimes life happens and yes sometimes we really need to do this. The issue is that in doing this, our babies haven’t been able to freely wiggle and move. They have been sat for too long, with their spine curved and the shoulders brought forward.

How long should a baby stay in a car seat?

When thinking about travel, according to The Lullaby Trust, there is no published evidence that sets out how long babies should be kept in a car seat when travelling.

They point out that infant healthcare professionals, safety experts and most car manufacturers recommend that babies should not be in a car seat for longer than 2 hours at a time and they should be taken out frequently.

They recommend that if your trip involves driving for long periods of time, you should stop for regular breaks. Not only will this allow you to stretch your own legs but you can check on your baby, take them out of the car seat and let them stretch and move around.

In addition to this, they advise that ideally, a second adult should travel in the back of the car with your baby, or if travelling alone, use a mirror to keep an eye on your baby.

Moreover to this, they state, if your baby changes its position and slumps forward, then you should immediately stop and take them out of the car seat and reposition them before continuing on your journey.

Ways to give your child opportunities to move if you use a travel system frequently

  • Try and leave the carrycot part on the pram, until your baby has full head control so that they can lay down in the pram, allowing them time to wiggle and move

  • If you are using the car seat on the buggy, give your child regular breaks and longer time out of the seat, when undertaking activities such as feeding or changing nappies

  • Take a blanket out with you, so you can lay your baby on the floor at friend's and family's houses

  • Lay your baby on your chest if you are out sitting down, rather than leaving them in the car seat for long periods

Family Friendly Travel Review: Ffolkes, Norfolk, UK

Exploring Family Friendly Norfolk

Ffolkes is one of the most fun, quirky and unique hotels we’ve stayed in as a family in recent years. Refurbished in 2017, the original building is a 300 year old coaching inn and has not only retained it’s historical charm, but it’s since had a big injection of personality, bold colour and fun. With a motto of Feast, Stay and Play, it ticks all of these boxes (and some) for an activity packed, family weekend away.

Ffolkes: Norfolk, UK

Location

Norfolk is well known and loved as a quintessential UK hotspot all year round and we are incredibly lucky to live only a couple of hours drive away. My husband and I tied the knot in Norfolk in 2019, so it’s also a favourite destination of ours. Someone once said to me that the beauty of Norfolk is in the fact that it’s an ‘Intentional Destination’; and by that he meant, due to it’s geography, being tucked away on the East Coast of England, you’ll never just be passing through on your waysomewhere else. Everyone who comes, is there intentionally, which I love!

Ffolkes is nestled in Hillington, a West Norfolk village on the edge of the A148. From pictures alone, you might have thought traffic noise would come into play, but we didn’t experience this at all (and our room was closer to the roadside than others.) There are three brand new spa cabins set right back into the fields behind Ffolkes, so if you’re keen for complete peace, I’d recommend selecting those for guaranteed tranquillity.

The hotel is less than five minutes drive from The Royal Residence of Sandringham Estate, which of course, we had to pay a visit. My eldest daughter has been learning about the Royal Family quite a bit at school following the Coronation and has consequently become a keen royalist. She was convinced we’d bump into the King, cue expectation management (!). His Majesty was otherwise engaged this time around. The main house wasn’t open to the public off season, but we had a fantastic time enjoying the woods and gardens, but most importantly, (aside from my delicious Coronation Chicken sandwich) was the expansive play area which the children went wild for.

The other highlight of our stay was a place the locals fondly refer to as ‘Sunny Hunny’ - Hunstanton Beach. The beach is around a 15 minute drive from Ffolkes and absolutely vast. In the warmer months, this makes for a wonderful whole day out. As it was a tad chillier, we wrapped up and took the girls for a morning walk and adventure across the dunes, finished off with a hot chocolate at a lovely cafe (dog friendly!) next to the beach.

Hunstanton Beach, Norfolk UK, Dog Friendly

Within 15-30 minutes drive of Ffolkes are other attractions such as Snettisham Park, Castle Riding and the RSPB’s Titchwell Marsh - all great options for days out with children so there is plenty to do nearby.

Accommodation

Dog Friendly Hotel, Norfolk, Ffolkes

Ffolkes has 23 rooms and three spa cabins, we stayed in the ‘Bunksuite’ - Room 21, which sleeps up to 6 and is also dog friendly. Wilma (our little lurcher) is always delighted to join us on our adventures, so it’s a real treat when she can come along to somewhere truly welcoming of canines. A dog blanket and bowls were provided for her and there was a little grassy haven across the carpark for loo breaks, plus lots of conveniently located poop bins, so Ffolkes have catered well for doggy guests. The restaurant and lounge area is also dog friendly. Ffolkes request you do not leave your dog alone in the room, so she did come with us wherever we went during our stay.

Aside from being super dog friendly, The Bunksuite was the epitome of child friendly. It had two sets of colourful, built in bunk beds, each with it’s own private den-like nook and reading light which my eldest loved. We were provided with a cot and cot bedding for our 1 year old which fit into the bunk room. I now always check if cot bedding is provided before we arrive anywhere, as we’ve been on a handful of trips and have been met with a bare cot with no mattress or sheets! So it was wonderful that these were provided.

The mattresses, bedding, pillows and towels were all incredibly comfortable and luxurious, plus we were given robes for us adults and little hooded robes for the children. If you’re a fan of BBC’s ‘The Traitors’ you may appreciate this…

The Traitors, BBC

From our room, opening our sliding glass doors revealed an outdoor undercover terrace and dining area, split by a rotating mirrored door - hidden behind which was an enormous, colourful, freestanding bath. The children LOVED this as it felt so unique and exciting for them. I also got to enjoy it - one evening I disappeared behind the door and had a bath ALL to myself! The dream as a busy parent!

The decor at the Ffolkes is what I could only describe as something along the lines of ‘Urban Arthouse Chic’. It had East London, modern, edgy vibes with cheeky touches. As an example, the restaurant and lounge areas were adorned with traditional, Georgian and Victorian portraits, set off by a collaged addition of a moustache, bow or inflated bubble gum on each image. Playfully hanging from the ceilings around our suite were Barbie dolls and Action Men, dressed up and humorously positioned. All of this absolutely delighted my children.

Facilities, Service & Family Friendliness

A lovely welcoming touch when we first arrived was a delicious coffee cake from Sponge, left in our room, which, like Ffolkes, is an organisation that forms part of the Norfolk Passport. The Norfolk Passport is a free to join membership programme that offers exclusive perks - at the Ffolkes, this is 10% off stays, food and drink, so it is definitely worthwhile signing up prior to your stay.

The service throughout our stay was impeccable, the whole family, dog included, had a warm, friendly welcome and at every turn we were met by helpful and cheerful members of the team, who were forthcoming with local recommendations of places to go and things to see.

Container Golf - ever heard of it? Neither had we! But I can guarantee, when you’ve tried it once, you’ll be back. This was essentially a game of mini golf, set up inside a maze of converted shipping containers, wildly decorated, at the back of the main building. Note the cost of playing isn’t included in your stay, so you need to book slots online (this was very easy as the booking QR code and all information formed part of our welcome pack). It was certainly an experience navigating it with a toddler, but she had just as much, if not more fun than us exploring each section.

The playground at Ffolkes is another highlight for families. It was totally secure and contained, and could only be accessed via the restaurant, which was reassuring from a safety perspective. It centres around a giant hollow ‘Dinosaur Egg’ with rope swings and cargo net, as well as a zip wire. The conservatory area of the restaurant adjoining the playground was glass fronted, so if you have slightly older children, you can enjoy your coffee and breakfast indoors whilst watching them play if you wish. If you’re like us - and parents of toddlers - you’ll be out there enjoying it with them!

Dining

Ffolkes had a real mixture of guests, including families, groups of friends and couples. There was an informal, energetic feel to the main restaurant in the evenings, with a vast cocktail menu and street food on offer.

The lunch and evening menus are on a rotation from different vendors. We tried out Oishii Street Kitchen which was a delicious asian fusion selection, with choices such as Bao Buns, Gyoza, rice bowls, burgers and loaded fries amongst others. There are also Pie Feasts on Sundays, Guac & Mole and Reesey's Street Tea (which has delicious desserts, not one for the calorie conscious consumer!)

The food was good value for money (particularly with our 10% Norfolk Passport discount) with starters and sides around £5-8 and mains around £11.50.

Breakfast and Brunch is on offer until midday on Saturday, which meant there was ample time to sample the large buffet of traditional offerings (think sausages, black pudding and hash browns) as well as some more off-piste options (for example spicy beans and pulled pork). There was also a large continental selection of cereals, yoghurt, fruit and pastries and unlimited coffee, tea and juice. The onsite chef was there ready to whip up fresh pancakes on tap as well as eggs of your choice.

Overall

We had an incredibly memorable stay, and Ffolkes is truly family (and dog!) friendly. If you’re looking for a laid back, super easy weekend getaway in Norfolk with children, or even need the perfect venue to host an event (Ffolkes is home to Stables which is a large event space!) then I’d highly recommend it. Container golf was certainly on the top of our list for our favourite part of the weekend, so we’ll be back!

The Bunksuite starts at £220 per night (sleeps 6)

A Family Friendly Winter Escape: Villa LA Dolce, Lake Como

For us, 2024 started with a very special, family friendly, winter escape. January, which is often low-key, bleak and, let's face it, rather long after a busy festive season, prompted us to plan a getaway to lift our spirits and set the tone for how we hope this year continues to unfold…

Having always heard wonderful feedback from others about their holidays to the famous Italian Lakes, we were fortunate enough to arrange a trip with The Luxury Travel Book and head to the heart of picturesque Lake Como - a destination which had consequently been on our wishlist for quite a while. We stayed in the exquisite Villa La Dolce, a luxurious property, full of history and character, nestled in the hills of Santa Maria Rezzonico - an ancient village in the upper Lario area of the lake which is 40 kms from Como.

The beginning of the year is usually a time for resolutions, gym subscriptions and cutting back, but before any of that truly set in, we decided to fully embrace the local culture. This of course meant indulging in (and carefully sampling) every pasta, pizza and tiramisu option available (because fully experiencing Italy wouldn’t be immersive without tucking in to the local cuisine). It did not disappoint.

Our trip unfolded against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains and the tranquil waters of Lake Como (which of course us adults had to have a quick dip in, not once, but twice…chilly but refreshing!). We were incredibly fortunate to have some fantastic weather (11-12C and sunshine) and although I haven’t visited the area in Summer to offer a comparison, we spoke to many locals who assured us that winter was the perfect time to visit - less hustle, quieter crowds and freedom to explore at leisure.

Booking

The Luxury Travel Book strikes an amazing balance between personalised travel concierge and a self catering accommodation booking platform. Unlike Airbnb or similar rental DIY sites which can be exhaustive (in all the wrong ways I find) The Luxury Travel Book experience is premium - but still very much value for money, particularly when arranging a family trip, where there are so many nuances and details that you don’t want to miss.

I can honestly report that the responsiveness and attention to detail from The Luxury Travel Book team was exceptional, creating an environment where our needs were not just met but exceeded, before, during and after our visit,

As an example, when we first came across Villa La Dolce we noticed a picture of the spiral staircase on the website - which for our 1 year old, would have been a fairground (for us…maybe not as enjoyable extracting her from it daily). Very quickly, we were reassured that this was not the main access staircase and could be easily secured and child proofed. As promised, when we arrived it was incredibly well blocked off and she couldn’t have gained access (even with her steadfast determination). This small detail was a huge plus for us as it really instilled trust.

All accommodation which forms part of The Luxury Travel Book is thoroughly reviewed in person prior to becoming part of the group, which means the properties are hand picked and personally assessed by the team, giving you full peace of mind when booking that all details in the description are 100% accurate and verified.

A huge plus of arranging your trip via The Luxury Travel Book is their bespoke app. We gained access to this prior to travelling and it was incredibly comprehensive. Not only did it have all of the key details of our booking, including the property layout, check in instructions and contact numbers should we need them, but our flight details were integrated and we received regular push notifications and updates. Not only this, there was a catalogue of local recommendations, restaurants, days out and activities and an online map of the local area. This was both super useful, and fun - my 7 year old really enjoyed looking through it with us and choosing places she wanted to see, so it was a lovely touch to give the children some insights into the destination beforehand.

Accommodation

Villa La Dolce stands as a testament to true Italian opulence and refinement, seamlessly blending timeless architecture with contemporary comforts. The views from the villa were astounding as it was nestled up high in a fantastic position - waking up on day one (having arrived late the night before) was so special. The air was fresh and clean and the mountains and Lake could be seen from our bedroom windows.

Villa La Dolce had some beautiful outdoor areas to relax - which although not perhaps synonymous with winter, they actually lent themselves well to mornings, sipping coffee in the sunshine of the glass orangery overlooking the garden. Come the Summer months, this spot would be fantastic for family gatherings next to the outdoor pool.

The interior of Villa La Dolce reflected Italian elegance. Each room was warm and cosy, had comfortable beds and luxurious bedding, with fresh fluffy towels provided and tasteful, classic furnishings. There was a real sense of it being a home from home, with stunning antiques and the odd family photo dotted around (we later found Villa La Dolce was the holiday home of a Milan based family) - a detail which actually made it all the more special.

The living room boasted a wood burning stove which was perfect for the evenings, as well as a TV and games area on the lower ground floor which lends itself to younger guests (and snooker loving adults!)

The kitchen was comprehensively equipped, complemented by modern (large) appliances which lent themselves to entertaining groups or for multi generational stays.

Service - The Luxury Travel Book

When we arrived, we were met by our wonderful concierge Iolanda, who was the epitome of professionalism and incredibly kind and helpful. A locally prepared lasagne and quiche had been provided for us which was nothing short of delicious, as well as drinks and breakfast items for the following morning. If you know you know - arriving somewhere with hungry children is rather cortisol inducing for parents! It took all of the work out of night one and the following morning, allowing us to totally relax straight away.

We were left comprehensive print outs of the ferry timetables and any seasonal closures we needed to be aware of, which honestly saved us a huge amount of time and googling. We also had a folder of local insights and recommendations which really elevated our experience - genuinely every restaurant we tried on the list was exceptional.

A lovely touch was a list of all of the child friendly activities going on in the area (The team went as far as to select only age appropriate activities for our girls.) This again, meant we had a wonderful starting point and some invaluable local knowledge to set us up. It felt so personalised and this meticulous planning of our travel arrangements, activities and dining reservations showcased their dedication to ensuring a memorable experience. This went above and beyond any villa rental we’d ever experienced and really set The Luxury Travel Book apart.

It is worth noting that The Luxury Travel Book has a plethora of local contacts in each location - we had access via our concierge to arrange beauty and spa treatments, haircuts, personal shoppers, jewellers (!) private helicopter and boat tours and babysitting. Everything was at our fingertips and Iolanda was responsive and helpful via Whatsapp throughout the stay.

Lake Como

January in Lake Como was still very much a relaxed, festive month and many of the Christmas and Epiphany events were in full swing. This meant there was lots to see and do, including dedicated ice skating rinks, which were ideal for children, as well as activities at local churches and libraries.

The reduced tourist crowds allowed us to explore the charming towns surrounding the lake at a leisurely pace and without having to plan too far ahead. We experienced the Lake primarily by utilising all of the local small ferries, which offered a superb, prompt and reasonably priced service and were buggy friendly. We hopped from Menaggio (closest terminal to the Villa) over to Bellagio and Varenna. It is also very easy to take a drive around the Lake and we did this one day, winding around via Dongo and Damaso, ending up in Colico for a Christmas Market. Many ferries allow cars on board if you prefer to take the car and have a longer adventure.

The only downside of winter in Como is a reduced offering of restaurants and shops, as locals were still enjoying their Christmas break, however we did not feel we were short of choice, it is more just something to be aware of if you’re travelling at this time of year.

Overall, we would absolutely visit again and would love to return during warmer months to enjoy everything Summer has to offer in the area.

Thule Urban Glide 2 Review

I’ll caveat this review by saying I may be a little biased when it comes to Swedish brand Thule - the reason being, I’m half Swedish. I do however think my favourable views on Scandinavian products come with good reason. On the whole, they tend to be thoughtfully designed, stylish but simple and have brilliant durability.

The Thule Glide 2 did not disappoint on this front. It is very much a multi-terrain, multi purpose stroller which seamlessly handles both urban environments as the name suggests, but also off-roading and jogging, making it incredibly versatile.

Having road tested many buggies now - Thule, known for its commitment to outdoor enthusiasts, delivers a promising contender as a perfect all rounder with the Urban Glide 2 if you’re looking for a pushchair that is suitable for both running and day to day use.

First Impressions

My first impression of the Thule Urban Glide 2 was the very obvious high quality of materials. It is stylish, well designed and looks and feels sturdy and robust. It was also incredibly smooth and light to manoeuvre with superior suspension.

Unboxing and Assembly

Unlike a few pushchairs I’ve road tested, the Thule Urban Glide 2 was incredibly simple to put together. It was pretty much just a case of folding out the frame and popping the wheels on and it was unboxed and assembled within less than 15 minutes. Big thumbs up for ease as I’m not a fan of 200 small parts! No fiddly or strenuous flat-pack-esque construction involved whatsoever (something we’d maybe expect from a Swedish brand!).

A note that accessories need to be purchased separately - for example the cup holder, rain cover, bumper bar and bassinet.

Design and Quality

This is a sleek, stylish pushchair. We tested the newer black on black frame and I like the fact this could be something you’d take into town for a coffee or for a country walk. It gives off a premium aesthetic so if appearance is important for you - The Urban Glide 2 certainly ticks the box.

It comes in three colour combinations, all are natural, muted tones - with the option of a black or aluminium frame and a black, blue or grey canopy.

The hood canopy has a peekaboo window so you can keep an eye on your little one and the fabric is water resistant and easily wiped down if there are any spills or accidents.

Age Range

The Urban Glide 2 is for children from birth up to 22kg (around 4-5 years old). It has an optional additional bassinet attachment available making it suitable from newborn upwards. The bassinet is easy to assemble with the frame and folds flat, so transporting it in the car or popping it away after use is incredibly straightforward. The bassinet is well padded and sturdy, a friend of ours has a two month old baby who was our chief tester and he seemed incredibly cosy as we went for a stroll! The bassinet is also compatible with the Thule Urban Glide 2 Double, so if you have two young children this is a fantastic choice for longevity.

The upright toddler seat is what I have primarily used for our 15 month old daughter. It reclines flat with one hand so works well during naps. One downside for me personally is the most upright option available is still relatively angled and my daughter enjoys being very upright! This was easily resolved by popping some padding behind the fabric seat but it could benefit from a soft wedge to pop behind her lower back so she’s a little more elevated.

In regards to age and using this as a running pushchair - note that jogging with babies under 8 months old is not advised, due to their head and neck stability and overall level of physical development being unable to withstand high impact movement when running. It’s worth consulting your GP or a paediatrician before you begin regular jogging with children under one year old.

Safety Features:

The Thule Urban Glide 2 has safety at the forefront of it’s design. All Thule products go through rigorous testing in areas such as durability, impact, stability and tipping. It has reflective materials on the rim and canopy edges for visibility - I would have loved to see more of this material but only because we are out and about quite a bit during the darker winter months. It boasts a 5 point Harness system which is secure and easy to put together. One side attaches at a time so it's possible to do one handed.

The canopy is generous on both the bassinet and upright seat, providing both weather and UV protection (UPF 50+).

There are two options for control and brakes - one twist brake on the handle bar which was unique and useful for quick stops or navigating slopes. The second footbrake is also easy to operate and because of it’s open design, doesn’t tend to get clogged with mud and dirt.

Comfort

Although my daughter can’t talk, she would make up for it in her own vocal way if she wasn’t comfortable and she seems incredibly content every time we are out and about in the Urban Glide. Both the bassinet and toddler seat are well padded and ventilated so although I am testing during colder weather, it would fare well when the temperatures rise in Summer. The five point harness sits snugly and the padding doesn’t slip on her shoulders, furthermore it is easy to adjust when necessary.

Storage

This pushchair truly hits the mark when it comes to storage. The Basket underneath the frame is huge and gives you ample space (ideal for shopping!). You can easily store your rain cover, a bag / spare clothes and my large winter coat went in easily when I took it off during a long walk.

There are two more additional storage compartments, one zip pocket at the front of the main base compartment which is perfect for smaller valuables such as keys or your purse. There is also a net storage bag on the back of the seat which is handy for things like childrens drinks or quick access snacks.

Adjustability and Folding Down

The Urban Glide 2 offers a one handed fold - this took a couple of attempts from me but once you get the technique it’s incredibly easy. Fitting it into the boot of the car does take up some space, when packed down it measures 87 x 69 x 34 cm however if you pop off the wheels (very easy to do) it allows for much more versatility. It was preferable doing this anyway due to mud on the wheels after walks.

The handle angle is one of my favourite things about this pushchair. The handle is ergonomically designed so that your hands are drawn down either side of it, with a turn brake in the middle. This meant my overall posture when walking and pushing the stroller was balanced and encouraged me to be more upright with my shoulders back (I’m no pilates expert but I felt so much more comfortable than hunched over a straight bar handle!) You can also move it to any height you wish with the buttons either side, (lower down to make it more compact when parked, or for if your toddler wants to get out and push they can reach!) and high enough for my taller husband. The material was also smooth but allowed for great grip, even when my hands were hot it didn’t become slippery.

Price and Value for Money

The Urban Glide 2 in my opinion offers three for one - if you are looking for a pushchair for running, city strolls and off roading it covers all functions effortlessly and therefore for me, justifies the price tag. At the time of publication these retail for £599.99. This does not include the bassinet which is sold separately for £249.99. Bare in mind the accessories are also extra - but many you may not feel you need and in a way it’s a benefit to just pick and choose what you personally require.

Pros

  1. The handle angle, comfort and versatility.

  2. Wheels and Suspension - The Thule Urban Glide 2 really does glide. The back wheels are 16” and it felt able to handle most terrain with ease and without your baby bumping around. The front wheel can also be locked in position for running.

  3. Brakes - it was so useful having one brake on the handle bar for temporary stops as well as an easy to use foot brake.

Cons

  1. The seat angle (personal preference and can be easily resolved).

  2. Width - this is quite a wide pushchair, since I mainly use this pushchair for walks and popping into town it's not such an issue but if I was living in a city and wanted it for shopping daily, it is certainly a little tricker to get in and out of narrow doorways.

  3. The cup holder - It’s fab for water bottles and reminded me to bring mine with me! However due to the angle it’s not suitable for hot drinks, which means coffee has to stay safely in your hand.

Dimensions and Weight Spec

Max child weight - 22 kg

Max stroller weight capacity - 34 kg

Folded dimensions - 87 x 69 x 34 cm

Weight - 11.5 kg

Shoulder width - 31.5 cm

Sitting height - 53 cm

Door pass through - 69 cm

Safety harness - 5-point

Conclusion

The Thule Urban Glide has proven to be a great all round pushchair and very suitable for our lifestyle - dog walks and semi rural with occasional visits to town. It is also super for running and my husband has used it for this many times and found it to be smooth, manoeuvrable with great suspension meaning comfort for our toddler.

If you’re torn between a jogging buggy, an off road stroller and a day-to-day pushchair, this does all three so in terms of value for money, it is an excellent option.

Bundle Bed: Family Spy Club Review

We are constantly on the move at the moment - I think having been locked down for so long we have made the most of visiting friends, family and taking all opportunities for grandparents to take care of our small person (night off anyone?!)

We first came across Bundle Beds via a friend and they had come highly recommended - I had been curious to try one for my daughter (4yrs old) and see if it solved the usual dilemma of - where should she sleep when we are away.

Options usually consist of:

  • Bed in another room (often meant a challenging bedtime of her telling us she’s scared in a new bed / room and one of us having to camp on the floor until she was asleep - slightly dampens the evening…plus the legitimate “will she fall out” query - which she often did…)

  • Cushions from the sofa dragged upstairs and pieced together with a sheet on top (usually these part ways in the middle of the night courtesy of a wriggling child, leaving a crevice and child waking up with their bottom stuck down the gap. In addition to this the adults have no sofa cushions for the duration of their stay)

  • Third option is drag mattress from option 1 into our bedroom. Generally heavy / won’t fit and frankly a colossal hassle)

Bundle Bed Assembly

The bundle bed arrived and assembly was pretty straight forward. At one point I contacted owner Lucy, who was super helpful and quick to reply - as I went into full baby brain and couldn’t get my mattress to slot in the mattress sleeve. Two easily resolved errors and good to know for anyone else who is as inept at self assembly as me - un-Velcro the top sheet to make space, and make sure you fully inflate the mattress. This way it fits super snug - and ta da! It even came with a little cardboard box as part of the packaging that doubled up as a castle which my daughter loved. I personally  appreciated that all packaging for the bed, including the plastic cover, was fully recyclable.

We opted for a “Tot to Ten” bed with bumpers (negates the falling out the side, which my child is well versed in!) This is suitable for toddlers through to age 12 so it has a huge amount of mileage in it.

Bundle Bed Bedding

The sheets it came with are incredibly soft 100% jersey cotton. No expense has been spared here in manufacture as it would have been easy to put in cheap scratchy bedding. I LOVE this about the brand, no corners have been cut and you’re getting a great quality product.

One thing to note is you only have one set of bedding included with purchase - but you can buy extras separately, and I’d probably recommend this as if your little one has a night time wet accident while away you’ve got back up. There is also a waterproof sheet available to add on which is a big bonus and my experience was that the bedding washed well and stayed really soft (all bedding is machine washable).

There are two colour ways, the Adventurer and the Space theme. Space was a big hit for us (coincided well with learning our planets, so lots of squeals of joy for Saturn when the duvet was unveiled.)

Bundle Bed - First Night

Bundle Bed - is it worth it?

The first night we road tested the bed was at home which tiny person was delighted about. Our house is not the warmest at night but the 15 tog duvet was fantastically warm and I did check her late into the evening and she was toasty. This is great to know for those chillier camping trips - but equally, a summer duvet is available to purchase separately during the hotter months.

One thing to note is my child is generally not a great sleeper, and usually gets up once or twice a night. I’ll state my disclaimer here as a bed does not guarantee a child to sleep through the night - but we were pretty chuffed to wake up in the morning having realised we got through a whole 11.5 hours with no wake ups while she was in the bundle bed. I won’t count my eggs before they’ve hatched but the second time the bed got rolled out during a sleepover with her grandmother, we had reports of the same - a full nights sleep. I’ll leave that there…but it’s worth a whirl if you’re short on shut eye!

Four year old feedback

I asked my daughter what she liked about the bed and she told me:

“I like the planets and how many there are.”

“I like the squashy side to snuggle.” (Bumpers!)

“I want to take this to wonderland when I visit the princesses.” (She refers to Disneyland here, which seems to be advertised on a loop in our household - so looks like we’re going!)

All in all she seemed to give it a big thumbs up.

Bundle Beds - Worth it?

This bed retails at £200, plus extras - bumpers for instance were an additional £50. This feels an investment to me - the fact that we have 8 more years use of this plus a second child will use it, means it certainly offers value for money. Something to point out too is that often European holidays will charge per additional bed in your room - the bundle bed totally negates this so if you add up those costs for holidays over 8 years +, you are certainly breaking even, if not saving.

Mostly though - it’s the total convenience of literally rolling up a bed, and rolling back up. I’m very impressed with it and would certainly recommend to any families who are out and about regularly. The next time it will make an appearance is dinner with friends in a weeks time, when we will be putting her to bed in the evening before the stealth transfer into the car later on….sadly the bundle bed can’t help with that nail biting manoeuvre but for everything else, go wild 🙌

Martinhal, Portugal: Family Spy Club Review

Family Spy Club - Maddie Donnelly - Fuss Free Family Travel Writer

Family spy club review: Martinhal lisbon oriente & martinhal sagres, Portugal

First and foremost, I would like to convey the feeling we’ve come away with as a family having just returned from a ten day trip with Martinhal. That feeling is: rested - and the fact that we’ve had an ACTUAL holiday - with children.

If you know, you know!

The end of the summer holidays and return to school, sparks many school drop off discussions with parents about what they got up to - an array of different trips from camping, to Airbnb stays, to all inclusive package getaways. A common theme from many of these travel stories, was the sense that despite me being told they had a great time - it more often than not came with a caveat; that it was hard work with the kids because of…(insert an array of reasons such as stone floors, no stair gates, thin walls, no A/C, lack of children's activities, sense of guilt for wanting to just lye and read a book and relax, having to plan all meals, little help from in laws who came along for the holiday) and the list could go on.

As we head towards October half term and our thoughts turn to our next holiday plans, we wanted to share our thoughts on Martinhal and chat to founder and travel expert Chitra Stern about how and why Martinhal began, and why it makes the perfect family getaway.

Roman Stern, CEO, Owner, Founder of Elegant Group & Chitra Stern, CEO, Owner, Founder of Martinhal Resorts and United Lisbon International School

Staying at Martinhal feels incredibly unique and very much tailored to the nuances of family life! How did you go about mapping out the Martinhal guest experience and do you feel being a mother yourself influenced an integral part of its creation?

Chitra Stern: Yes, we started to develop the business idea at the same time we started a family. Having our first child made us realise that sophisticated places were not welcoming children and child-friendly places didn’t offer the quality that we were used to. So we found a new niche in the luxury hospitality market and created a unique concept. Having four children before we opened our first resort in Sagres and living on site certainly helped us to develop the concept and details further!

What in your opinion, sets Martinhal apart from other family holidays?

Chitra Stern: The family-friendly ethos and details, offering a truly exclusive experience to each family member resulting in happy adults AND children at the end of their holiday. No one feels that they’ve had to compromise on the quality of the experience. Being not only child-friendly, but also parent-friendly, considering all that’s needed for a luxury holiday for the whole family without compromising on design, elegance, and quality is what sets us apart.

So what makes a good family holiday?

This is pretty subjective and there are so many factors at play, including children's ages (and how many of them you’ll be in charge of!) personalities, whether they are neurodiverse or having additional needs, individual specific likes and dislikes and the parents or caregivers sense of what they find relaxing and enjoyable. There is no one size fits all, but for us, flexibility is key and above all, EASE. We have two

children aged six and fourteen months, work incredibly hard in our day to day lives and jobs, so anything for an easy life, happy children, minimum fuss and effort is a huge win for us. Above all we also needed some time to ourselves, as much as we adore our children, spending time with each other too on holiday was very important.

Why Martinhal?

Martinhal was founded on the parents-matter-too principle of “Enjoy your cappuccino with the foam still on top”. This resonated. With our girls the ages they are, one of us is always running off after our smallest, eyes to the ground and surveying for danger while the other plays with and entertains our six year old while she discusses the ins and outs of just about everything in life. (Her latest interest is Snowshoe Hares and the Tundra…I’ll say no more…).

Martinhal currently has four destinations in Portugal, two in Lisbon; Martinhal Chiado in the centre and the newest addition, Martinhal Lisbon Oriente - as well as two in the Algarve - Martinhal Sagres and Martinhal Quinta Do Lago. We were fortunate enough to spend three nights at Lisbon Oriente which opened its doors in June 2023, as well as a five night visit to Martinhal Sagres.

When speaking to some other guests during our visit, there was a common theme of families wanting to return year after year. Why do you think Martinhal attracts this level of guest loyalty?

Chitra Stern: Loyalty is thanks to the excellent service and staff, combined with the amazing facilities. I think guests came back because we ensure hassle-free luxury family holidays and guests know they will feel the whole family has had a restful holiday with beautiful memories for all ages. At Martinhal, guests can enjoy time as a family, time as a couple, as well as “me time” achieving the right balance so each family member feels they have had the holiday they sought.

Martinhal Lisbon Oriente

Based fifteen minutes outside of Lisbon's centre, the newest addition to the Martinhal family is the grand and glamorous Lisbon Oriente, situated in The Parque das Nações (Park of Nations). This area is perfect for families - unlike Lisbon centre, which is beautiful but very hilly and cobbly so not as suitable for buggies and small legs, The Park of Nations offers a number of attractions within easy walking distance, including some beautiful gardens and parks, The Vasco da Gama Shopping Centre, Lisbon Oceanarium, The Pavillion of Knowledge science centre and the cities Telecabine Cable Car. We rode this as a return journey for around €25 Euro and it offered a super fun ride for the children and spectacular views over Lisbon and the Tagus River.

Lisbon Oriente is ideal for those looking for a city break with their family - whether that be a work trip or for pleasure. From a corporate perspective - Oriente is brilliantly set up, with a business suite consisting of meeting rooms and private call booths. It boasts an expertly staffed kids club to entertain the little ones, as well as a brand new gym and indoor and outdoor pools for leisure. Our two bedroom apartment was five star, fully equipped with everything you may need for your family and with the option to self cater, it provided us with great flexibility during our stay.

The Terrace Restaurant - Martinhal Lisbon Oriente Review

During our stay, the Martinhal team were thoughtful and attentive and always on hand - we were fully supported by the on site concierge who helped arrange everything from high chairs through to airport transfers and car hire. What was so wonderful was the sense that despite it being an incredibly smart, five star hotel, the children were never once frowned at for being loud, or dripping their swimming costumes in the lift on the way back from the pool! The atmosphere was accommodating and welcoming and it allowed us to fully enjoy everything the accommodation had to offer.

Lisbon Oriente is set within a green oasis, high walled garden which is hidden from the from the front facade. The Terrace restaurant, serving up exquisite, locally sourced food, is on the same level as the garden, meaning the children could run around outside safely while we ate and we could also enjoy drinks on the outdoor patio. Childcare is also available during your meals by pre-arrangement.

During our stay we noticed that technology played a crucial role in the guest experience - with the use of the MyMartinhal.com website. How has using this transformed the way guests are able enjoy their stay at Martinhal? How do you balance this with the more traditional face to face hospitality dynamic?

Chitra Stern: We have worked hard on My Martinhal to ensure that guests can access what is going on across the resort as we have so many different activities for the different age groups and for parents. In addition, there are different dining options and even themed dining events. My Martinhal enables guests to get information about all services available, check availability and make bookings quickly. Guests have become more convenience oriented and want to have the information at their fingertips from anywhere in the resort. However this will never replace the face to face and personal relationships with guests. Guests really create great relationships with our staff during their stay that make a difference.

Childcare

Special Touches - Gift in our babys cot when we arrived at Lisbon Oriente

My husband and I utilised the kids club facilities one afternoon (both of our daughters stayed together which was nice for their first session). I instantly felt at ease despite never having left the children with people I didn’t know - we found the team professional, kind, compassionate and reassuring and activities were tailored for both ages. My older daughter had so much fun that she didn’t want to leave.

These precious few hours meant we had the opportunity to head into Lisbon centre - we took E-Scooters along the river which was a fun way to explore and cost around €12 Euro with the Lime app, taking around 35 minutes. We visited the Time Out Food Market which was fantastic for food and drink and a fun atmosphere - I wouldn’t have said it's suitable for children owing to the noise and crowds (and toilet set up!) it would have been hard not to lose them! But for adults looking for a meal and night out it was great fun. We returned to Oriente via taxi which took under ten minutes.

Property Ownership

Martinhal Oriente was constructed during the ‘Golden Visa’ period, which is now coming to an end - but all apartments and villas are available to buy - meaning you can own some prime, expertly managed real estate with all of the benefits of a stay at Martinhal. This opportunity, alongside the newly opened Martinhal International School mean that if you’re considering a relocation to Lisbon it is a fantastic set up to transition your family. I must admit we were very tempted! Lisbon is brimming with culture, art and energy so it’s certainly worth exploring if you’re keen on a European move.

The opportunity of property ownership feels to be an important part of the Martinhal offering. How can families benefit from owning a Martinhal property?

Chitra Stern: It works differently according to each resort but we offer guaranteed return investment opportunities where owners can use the property for shorter periods in the year, if that is what they want, as well as residential options at Martinhal Oriente where people choose to live in branded residences with all the services.

Tell us a bit more about the Martinhal International School in Lisbon? How did the idea come about and do you think there will be further development in the education space?

Chitra Stern: I’ve been part of a government-led task force to attract foreign direct investment and during that process, I brought up the need for a quality international school within central Lisbon, in order to compete with other worldwide destinations. Education is crucial for families when deciding where to live or relocate to and Lisbon didn’t have enough International Schools to attract companies and families to reach their foreign direct investment goals. At the same time, we have identified an opportunity to breathe new life into a former educational facility still with its original art deco façade in Park of Nations, and though it was the perfect location for our United Lisbon International School, right next to Lisbon’s most modern neighbourhood.

Through extensive research selecting the right global industry partners, as well as having a large family of our own, my husband and I were able to apply our first-hand knowledge of the importance of education for international families relocating to a major capital city like Lisbon.

The school’s extensive state-of-the-art offering and facilities were completed and opened for operations in September 2020. It was the start of the transformative community that is Edu Hub Lisbon. Watch this space!

How has the recent economic climate affected Martinhal, if at all, when it comes to family holidays and those looking to move abroad?

Chitra Stern: For many years now, foreigners have been moving to Portugal for different reasons over the years.  Portugal has a temperate climate which appeals to many northern Europeans.  Safety and security issues have also played a role as people have migrated from cities such as Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo to Lisbon.  Lisbon features high on the Global Peace Index, making it one of the most attractive places to live. Geopolitics all over the world dictate that people want to find safer and stable places to live. People want to feel welcome where they move to and Portugal has a very open, tolerant and liberal society.

The recent economic climate post-COVID has been rocky all over the world. Portugal’s economic data have been quite good compared to other countries although there is a housing crisis here like in other countries.

Tourists feeling the crunch of the economic situation at home have started coming in other seasons other than summer to enjoy an early summer, an extension of their summer or winter sun as well.  Flights tend to be cheaper outside of August as well, so it makes sense.

Martinhal Sagres

The second part of our trip took us South to Martinhal Sagres, the southernmost point of Europe in Portugal's Algarve region. Nestled on the picturesque cliffs of Portugal's Algarve coast, Martinhal Sagres Beach Resort is a true gem that seamlessly blends luxury, family-friendliness, and natural beauty.

What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in guest expectations and demand over the past thirteen years since opening your flagship resort, Martinhal Sagres?

Chitra Stern: Well, the world has changed a lot, as have guests’ expectations. People want to feel the places they visit and the brands they use are aligned with their life philosophy. Sustainability and authenticity as well as exclusivity have become more important.  Guests want to keep going back to hotel brands they truly love and I believe Martinhal is a “love brand”.  We have also had to invest a lot in IT hardware and software over the years as families have multiple devices and need much more bandwidth as devices are used for entertainment, social media, business and communications. More guests are “working from anywhere” as well.

Accommodation

Martinhal Sagres offers a variety of accommodation options, from luxury hotel rooms to spacious villas. We stayed in one of the two bedroom Ocean Villas, which I’d say are probably the best location (easily accessible from the children's clubs, village square play area and pools - little legs in our family are not keen on walking far!) all whilst offering breathtaking views of the beach and sea. The rooms were both downstairs with an open plan living room, kitchen and terrace upstairs. This meant you could really enjoy the views in the mornings and evenings as the sun set. We found it to be clean and well-appointed, fully air conditioned and with all the amenities you'd expect from a luxury resort. In comparison to Oriente, it felt more of a beachside holiday home than a hotel apartment which was apt for the location and feeling of relaxation. The towel and bedding test were passed with flying colours - super soft and luxurious!

What is Martinhals approach to sustainability and environmental responsibility now and for the future?

Chitra Stern: Sustainability and environment have been on our priorities since the beginning and when building the projects. We have solar and photovoltaic panels, have worked on water desalination system in Sagres to be able to use it to water our gardens, that have been carefully planned with indigenous plants, hence resulting in the gardens having less water needs. Martinhal Sagres has been awarded the Green Key award for its environmental-friendly procedures and processes. There are a number of activities for recycling, single use plastic reduction, laundry policies as well as beach cleaning and local charity support. Martinhal Sagres specially has shown a great impact on the local community by creating jobs and bringing business to local commerce and activity partners.

The newly-built Martinhal Oriente stands as a visually stunning testament to the art of sustainable luxury architecture. Its design narrative revolves around the interplay between opulence and ecological consciousness, highlighting a commitment to responsible urban development. Within this architectural marvel lies a profound respect for nature, evident in its lush green façade with Portuguese olive trees gracing each balcony. Inside, biophilic design thrives, increasing guests’ connectivity to nature through direct and indirect natural elements and Portuguese plants, fostering an atmosphere of tranquillity and wellness. Deepening its commitment to water conservation, a meticulously designed central drip irrigation system waters the plants, sparing precious water resources.

The large, luminous spaces within the hotel owe their brilliance not only to the use of powerful low energy LED lighting, but also to the generous expanse of windows inviting the sun’s radiance to embrace every corner. This design choice not only minimises dependence on artificial lighting but also paints the interiors in the changing colours of the seasons with beautiful garden views. Moreover, the integration of solar panels contributes to the use of renewable energy to power the building, an infinite energy source that creates no harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Martinhal Lisbon Oriente boasts a sophisticated central control system underpinned by the cutting-edge Internet of Things (IoT) technology, where a KNX system orchestrates lighting, energy, and water seamlessly, empowering users for resource optimisation.

In line with our values, Martinhal Lisbon Oriente finds its place within Parque das Nações, a beacon of sustainable living. This modern neighbourhood encapsulates the future of urban planning with its energy efficient Climaespaço heating and cooling system, and efficient waste collection through a pneumatic vacuum suction system exemplifying a commitment to a cleaner world.

Service

The staff at Martinhal Sagres truly shine and we couldn’t fault the service. They are not only courteous and attentive but also genuinely warm and welcoming. On our second from last night our baby daughter was very sick in the night (that feeling of doom sets in as you think about having to travel home!) and at 1am we realised we had no bottled water. One call to the concierge and within 5 minutes one of the team came to the door with bottles of water, fresh towels and sheets. We also got a courtesy call the next day to check on her to see if she needed to see the on site medical team (thankfully she was absolutely fine!) This service was just excellent and made us feel truly looked after.

The Martinhal team were all incredibly knowledgeable, helpful and thoughtful throughout our trip, both at Lisbon Oriente and in Sagres. How do you maintain this seamless level of service and brand consistency throughout all sites?

Chitra Stern: We have a strong company culture that has been built organically over the years.  We invest a lot in the recruitment and training processes. There are several internal marketing with communication efforts, obviously. Employee loyalty is something we’ve worked hard on since the beginning and we have created a strong Martinhal family recruited and retained with our brand values in mind.

One thing parents do worry about when away is medical facilities and the nearest hospital - so for the worriers out there who like to cover all bases (us!) there is a nurse on site who is always around for immediate medical first aid. Vila do Bispo is 10 Minutes from Sagres and can provide an ambulance and the nearest public hospital is in Lagos (30 min drive) in addition to Alvor (40 minutes drive).

Family-Friendly

The "Raposa Kids Club" with it’s iconic fox mascot offers an array of age-appropriate clubs and schedule of activities for children throughout the week. When we arrived we were gifted very sweet little fox toys for the girls, sun hats, a backpack and Martinhal bottle which the children loved. Due to the size and the capacity of the Sagres resort, our girls were in two different clubs but this meant my 6 year old came away having met some lovely new friends to play with, all her age.

The baby club takes infants from 6 months old, which is much younger than many other holiday providers and for this fact alone I’d say that if you have babies under twelve months or just above, you can confidently leave them in great hands and enjoy some time to yourself. They had very very charming little baby outings each day around the resort in six seater buggies, it was great they weren’t just indoors the entire session and just felt more enriching (which alleviated any parent guilt for having them in clubs!) The older children's clubs also organised a huge variety of outdoor activities including swimming sessions throughout the week to keep things varied and entertaining.

The playgrounds, four swimming pools, and secluded beach access all contribute to the family-friendly atmosphere and it's all within such easy reach so great to mix up the holiday each day. All restaurants were near play areas so the children could entertain themselves, within view, whilst adults finished their meal.

Can you share any notable family stories or memorable moments since Martinhal began?

Chitra Stern: Oh! We have had so many! We have worked hard on celebrating family events at Martinhal – for example my parents-in-law’s milestone birthdays, or my parents 50th wedding anniversary, our own milestone birthdays, our children’s birthdays. These events have brought together family and friends from all over the world sometimes and we have created wonderful memories. These celebrations are so important, especially since COVID.  During COVID, we held onto some of these memories and moments while we longed to see each other again.

We also make it a point to celebrate each opening with an inauguration party. It is important for the stakeholders as well as us as founders and CEOs.

Portugal is clearly close to your heart and In 2019 you delivered a TEDX talk about why Portugal is Trending. Do you foresee Martinhal expanding into other countries at some point in the future? Finally, what is your vision and plans for the future of Martinhal?

Chitra Stern: Yes, I do foresee Martinhal expanding to other countries. It is in fact a responsibility to do so as many guests have asked when we are going to open in the rest of Europe and in the USA!

Food and Drink

Martinhal Sagres offers three main restaurants, O Terraço, with its panoramic ocean views, serving more traditional Portuguese cuisine, while As Dunas Beach Bar and Restaurant which specialises in seafood just steps from the beach. It offered daily catch specials to choose from and was our personal favourite of the three! Os Gambozinos is located in the village square (a bit of an epicentre for the exodus post-kids club!) and this offered the genius of a children's buffet, at a perfect, edible temperature (read: no hangry children or frantic blowing on the food to cool it down, so they could eat immediately.) Within the village there was also the more laid back option of the Josper grill - and poolside you could also grab a bite.

Most mornings we ate at O Terraço which offered a huge and diverse breakfast buffet, with a wide selection of fresh and locally sourced ingredients. Prosecco was also unlimited should you be so inclined on a morning!

Let’s talk food! How does Martinhal cater for all family members during their stay? (both adventurous and perhaps not so adventurous!) This is often such a big sticking point when families decide to embark on a trip away!

Chitra Srern: Gastronomy is key for Martinhal, good quality and wide range of options for various needs and tastes are part of the Martinhal experience. Based on fresh and seasonal ingredients, we offer a variety of food options through our restaurant concepts. Our menus include vegetarian and vegan options and pay high attention to dietary restrictions (allergies and intolerances). Our restaurants not only offer childrens menus but also fresh purees for babies from 6 months of age. As for drinks, Martinhal invites guests to discover the very best of Portuguese wines as well as some signature mocktails and cocktails.

Activities

Whether you're an adventure enthusiast or looking to unwind, Martinhal Sagres has you covered. The resort offers a range of activities, from water sports and tennis to yoga and spa treatments. The Martinhal Surf School is perfect for those looking to catch some waves, and the nearby nature reserves provide ample opportunities for hiking and exploring the Algarve's natural beauty.

In summary, our stay at Martinhal Sagres Beach Family Resort exceeded our expectations in every way. This is not just a resort; it's a haven for families. The combination of exceptional service, family-friendly amenities, delicious cuisine, and the awe-inspiring natural beauty of the Algarve makes Martinhal Sagres a destination worth returning to - we can't recommend it enough, and we're already planning our next visit.

If having read all of this one of our readers are now considering booking a stay with Martinhal, how would you describe the experience they may have? Why should they choose to have their next trip with Martinhal?

Chitra Stern: They will certainly enjoy their time at Martinhal! Which Martinhal depends on what experience they want – beach, golf, city or an urban resort! They will definitely enjoy the different culinary experiences at Martinhal – especially in Martinhal Sagres and Martinhal Lisbon Oriente.  Creating #MartinhalMemories are what we are about!

Ocado Baby Christmas Gifts -family spy club review

Well Halloween is officially over and Christmas is very much next up on the agenda. My five year old has of course discussed Christmas since her birthday in June, and Halloween had simply bought me a little more time. The present requests are now in full swing and despite wishing I was one of those people who (I am SO envious of) had the foresight to buy Christmas decorations and gifts whilst they were on sale in January – that was of course an utter pipe dream. Next year I vow (again) to be that person.

This year we welcome a new addition to the family. My second daughter was born in July and as promised by other parents with more than one child, you do become savvier the second time around. Read: Frugal.

Sadly though, I also find it comes with a certain slap dash approach of ‘Nooo they don’t need that / Oh I did that last time and it took ages / I’m not going to bother with *insert gift or activity* again. Maybe this is just me… but I’m almost saddened by my own laissez faire attitude with her and now worried the poor girl will miss out on all the things that were cute and exciting (for me mostly) the first time around.

One example of this is, I’ve already been asked by godparents and friends what the baby would like for Christmas. Well the answer up until recently has been: ‘Nothing, as she won’t know either way’. Even writing that feels a bit mean. This coupled with the fact that we have everything we ‘need’ for her from the first time around.

I was delighted when asked by bloss to review some of Ocado’s goodies for the festive period. It meant some gift inspiration for both girls and of course meant I clawed back some semblance of decency with my parenting.

Stocking fillers

I’m a sucker for Christmas themed items and one of the first little treats was a ‘My First Christmas’ Bib from M&S which is super sweet and will definitely bring some Christmas cheer to the dinner table!

My five year old daughter is also in for some fab stocking fillers, with Janet & Allan Ahlbergs classic book “Funny Bones’ in the mix (my husband is in the medical profession so this is an ode to him!) as well as 1001 Encanto Stickers and a Frozen themed memory game.

Rainbow Stacker / Thats Not My Dinosaur Book

My littlest is only four months old but this is the fun time when babies start to really be interested in things, specifically grabbing. I discovered she was at this stage the hard way as she grabbed my bowl of cereal one morning recently and it flew across the room, five minutes before leaving for the school run.

It’s an early Christmas present (that I’ll be wrapping up and re-gifting her as she won’t remember) but the wooden Rainbow Stacker has gone down a storm. I love the fact it has some longevity too over the next 12 months as I understand it’s great for children's motor skills and coordination.

Another sensory treat, and a super gift is the very sweet “That’s Not My Dinosaur' book. We’re such a fan of this touch and feel book series in our house. My eldest daughter loves dinosaurs, so it’s proven to be a really special little book for them to read together.

Calpol Vapour Plug-In

Something that has been useful for both girls during this delightful cough-and-cold season is the Calpol Vapour Plug-In. I’d not actually used these before and simply relied on oral calpol when they were poorly. However, the struggle (especially with a baby who relies on a dummy) is the blocked nose which makes sleep elusive, pretty much non-existent.

The plug-in worked much better than I’d expected and definitely took the edge off congestion for both of them. It lasts around eight hours, so it’s perfect for overnight. Refill tablets are available to buy so it's one to hang on to for the winter months!

Weleda Body Wash & Shampoo / Childs Farm

I’m a bit of a stickler for bathtime in our house. I am quite picky about the products I use for the children and mindful of the ingredients (many products claim to be natural but the extracts are minimal!).

Although Weleda Body Wash & Shampoo doesn’t tick EVERY box, it is one of the more natural products. It’s great for sensitive skin and I have used it for bathtime bubbles, shampoo and body wash so it’s very versatile. I equally love the Childs Farm range. Their fragrance-free body wash is a lovely all rounder, as buying the super everything-free-ultra natural brands does get expensive when you’re bathing two every night! I like how affordable this was.

Oral B Junior Electric Toothbrush

My eldest daughter will also be receiving a toothbrush upgrade this Christmas from Ocado. The Oral B Junior Electric Toothbrush comes in purple which I already know means it will go down well. This has a useful timer on it and is similar enough to our adult toothbrushes that I know she’ll get the hang of it quickly watching and brushing her teeth at the same time as us.

Professional Dentists apparently suggest you continue to help your child with teeth brushing until age six or seven to make sure they have fully cleaned their teeth. But I’m hoping this will take some of the leg work out for us! I don’t know about other parents but getting my child to stand still for long enough to get a toothbrush around her mouth is nigh on impossible!

Halo Swaddle

Up until recently, my baby daughter was swaddled for all naps and at night. Something we did when our first was little too. But babies are crafty and despite numerous attempts with different products, she always managed to break free and inevitably woke herself up.

I LOVED using the Halo Sleep Sack this time around. It took the fuss out of swaddling and gave options for her arms to be in or out, hands to face. Plus, because of the design, it didn’t inhibit her hip development. This product is actually recognised by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute for peace of mind.

I also appreciated the zip at the bottom for easy nappy changes when she was in that half-asleep state! We have the Halo Cot so I like this brand and would certainly recommend the swaddle.

DryNites - Huggies

Although she will be upset in years to come for me mentioning this, my older daughter is still in nappies overnight currently (age 4). Having researched this thoroughly and speaking to a couple of experts, I understand this is a hormone related symptom. It is in fact very normal / common for children to still wet the bed overnight up until age seven with no concerns.

She has however asked me herself now if she can stop using nappies. Which is fine except we need to manage the inevitable accidents that are bound to occur. I’ve already bought waterproof duvet covers and sheets, one great hack from another parent was to have multiple layers of sheets and waterproofs so you can literally whip one layer off in the night and have a clean one underneath! Genius!

I wanted to transition her into ‘Nappy Pants’ and the Huggies DryNites have been ideal. Mainly because they are Frozen themed, so she was excited to wear them. But they also have the feel of pants whilst maintaining the absorbancy. This is still a work in progress but so far so good!

Overall, what I came to find having shopped and reviewed Ocado’s childrens range, is that the gifts and goodies available pleasantly surprised me. There was a perfect balance between necessity and fun. Even some of the gifts came with a side helping of developmental learning! Win-Win…

If you’re looking to get your Christmas gifts, kids necessities and groceries all in one place for a very fuss-free festive period, I’d thoroughly recommend checking out what Ocado has to offer.
